Electrify America is changing how you pay for EV charging

Electrify America is changing how EV drivers pay for charging sessions, and it’s ditching one of the more confusing parts of its app in the process.

The company says it’s removing account balances and automatic reload functions from the Electrify America app over the coming weeks. Going forward, charging session costs will be billed directly to the credit or debit card tied to a user’s account.

If drivers still have money left in their current Electrify America balance, that money won’t disappear. The remaining balance will automatically be applied to the next charging session. If the balance doesn’t fully cover the cost, the rest will be charged to the card on file.

Once the account balance runs out, all future charging sessions will be billed directly to the saved payment card.

Electrify America said Digital Pass subscriptions won’t change.

Temporary authorization holds are replacing auto reloads

The charging network is also changing how pre-authorizations work.

Instead of automatically reloading account balances, Electrify America will now place temporary $20 authorization holds on payment cards during charging sessions. Drivers will still only be charged for the actual amount of electricity they use.

The company noted that how long those holds stay pending depends on the customer’s bank or credit card.

Electrify America appears to be trying to simplify payments as public fast charging networks continue working to improve reliability and user experience – two things EV drivers regularly complain about.

The network currently operates more than 5,600 DC fast chargers and Level 2 chargers across North America. Electrify America’s Hyper-Fast charging network, which can deliver speeds up to 350 kW, now spans 47 states plus Washington, DC.

The company also said it upgraded more than 1,100 chargers to next-generation hardware in 2025.
