Just when we thought Porsche’s stunning new Mission S concept couldn’t get any more exciting, the German automaker has revealed another detail that should have driving enthusiasts grinning from ear to ear. As we covered in our initial post of the Porsche Mission S unveiling, Porsche is preparing an entirely new mid-engine supercar platform intended to sit above the legendary 911. Now, according to a new report from Road & Track, Porsche CEO Michael Leiters has confirmed that the Mission S platform has been engineered to accommodate a traditional manual transmission alongside the company’s excellent PDK dual-clutch automatic. Yes, we’re talking about a potential flagship Porsche supercar with three pedals and a proper stick shift. In an automotive world increasingly obsessed with electrification, automated gearboxes, and outright acceleration numbers, that’s the kind of news we love hearing.

Speaking during the Mission S debut in New York City, Leiters explained that the new platform was intentionally developed with flexibility in mind, allowing Porsche to offer pure internal combustion or hybrid powertrains while supporting different transmission configurations. However, having the engineering capability to install a manual gearbox doesn’t necessarily mean Porsche will offer one when the production model arrives. As Leiters told Road & Track, customer demand will ultimately determine what the company builds. That’s a reasonable approach, especially considering the performance expectations surrounding a flagship positioned above the 911.

Still, we’d argue that if there’s any automaker that understands the emotional connection between a driver, a clutch pedal, and a perfectly executed gear change, it’s Porsche. The company has continued offering manual transmissions in some of its most celebrated performance cars, even when its PDK gearbox can deliver quicker lap times. Sometimes the joy of driving has absolutely nothing to do with shaving a few tenths off a stopwatch.

What’s particularly encouraging is how the possibility of a manual transmission fits into the Mission S’s overall philosophy. Porsche has already demonstrated a refreshing willingness to embrace traditional driving elements, including a physical ignition key, analog-inspired instrumentation, and an interior that doesn’t rely on an overwhelming collection of touchscreens. Then there’s the tantalizing mystery surrounding the engine itself. Porsche still hasn’t confirmed what’s powering the concept, but Road & Track noted that when Leiters fired up the Mission S and drove it onto the stage, it produced an unmistakably mechanical sound reminiscent of a boxer engine, potentially one with more cylinders than we’ve become accustomed to seeing in modern Porsches. Combine that observation with the previously teased 8,000-rpm redline, and it’s difficult not to imagine something rather special hiding behind the passenger compartment. A high-revving naturally aspirated flat-8-cylinder engine paired with a six-speed manual would certainly be a dream combination, although we’re still firmly in speculation territory when it comes to the actual powertrain.

For us, this latest development makes the Porsche Mission S considerably more interesting than another exotic supercar simply chasing the biggest horsepower figures or quickest Nürburgring lap time. Don’t get us wrong, we fully expect Porsche to deliver extraordinary performance, particularly if this new flagship is going to justify its position above the already astonishing 911 GT3 RS and 911 Turbo. But there’s something wonderfully refreshing about the possibility of a modern mid-engine supercar that prioritizes driver involvement just as much as outright speed. A PDK-equipped Mission S would undoubtedly be spectacular, but a manual version could become something truly memorable, perhaps even a spiritual successor to the raw, engaging character of the Carrera GT. Porsche hasn’t confirmed a production manual, engine specifications, pricing, or a launch date, so there’s still plenty left to discover. Nevertheless, we’re hoping enough future buyers speak up and convince Porsche to make the three-pedal option a reality. After all, if you’re going to build a special new supercar that celebrates the brand’s rich history, why not give enthusiasts the opportunity to shift their own gears?
