UPDATE: 2026/10/12 11:14 EST BY SEAN MCMANUS

What Does “Trailhawk” Mean On Jeeps?

We added a section to explain what the Trailhawk badge means on models like the upcoming Grand Cherokee.

It may seem that Jeep has already brought out enough new models and provided enough shake-ups to its lineup for things to carry over into next year, but the famed automaker is not done yet, and there are many future Jeep models on the way that we need to discuss. We have seen the arrival of the all-new hybrid Jeep Cherokee as well as the arrival of the trail-rated Recon EV already, but there are new cars that have been announced for next year, and others planned to expand the brand’s reach in the future.

You can expect the return of some nameplates we’ve seen in previous years, as well as the launch of all-new models and even different takes on designs that we’d never imagined. So, here is everything we know about the cars you can expect to come from this historic automaker in the future, as well as when they are believed to be landing, so you don’t end up buying a merely good Jeep before the best one comes along…

This article provides a look at all the future Jeep cars that have been confirmed to be going into production by Stellantis/Jeep in the future. All the cars are either starting production this year for the next model year or are coming in the future with a release date yet to be announced. All pricing and specification information is sourced directly from the manufacturer, and is correct at the time of writing.

    2027 Jeep Wrangler/Gladiator Sarge

Given that Jeep is one of very few automakers that can claim to have had a direct role in winning a world war, it isn’t surprising that it is making a huge fuss about its 85th birthday. To mark this most important of anniversaries for the original Willys MB, Jeep has used that car as inspiration for a special edition (one of many) of the Wrangler and its Gladiator pickup sibling.

It might not be the first special-edition Wrangler to exist, as there was the Willys ’41 before it, but this new ’41 Drill Sergeant takes things even further, wearing the same military green paintwork as its predecessor, but also being available in grey, black or white, with a grille and decals that can be in contrasting colors to the main paint job. Inside, tan and green leather dominate the dash and upholstery, further differentiating it from the Willys ’41.

In the case of the Wrangler, you can have the Sarge trim with either two doors or four, and you can have both the Sarge Wrangler and the Sarge Gladiator with all the stylistic touches that this trim brings, or you can have them in Rubicon trim if you want your Jeep with its rugged, war-winning looks to be able to off-road as well as it looks. Orders started in late summer 2026, so examples of this special edition should be arriving imminently…

2027 Jeep Grand Cherokee Trailhawk And Overland

If you are currently shopping for a Jeep Grand Cherokee and fancy a trim that is less focused on luxury and more geared towards the great outdoors, either the Trailhawk or the Overland are the ones you will be searching for. If you go to Jeep’s website today, however, you will see no such trim for the Grand Cherokee available, as the mild refresh for the 2026 model year saw the hybrid 4xe trim getting dropped and with it the Trailhawk and Overland models.

For MY2027, however, they are making a comeback, and they are doing so as pure gas models. This means that the Overland and Trailhawk will get Stellantis’ Hurricane 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-four which makes 324 hp and 332 lb-ft of torque. The older Pentastar V6 is now only offered for the entry-level Laredo and Laredo X trims.

Aside from the engine and the mixed feelings we have about it, having tested it on other Grand Cherokee trims, the Trailhawk comes with skid plates, a low-range gearbox, rear eLSD, air suspension, special off-road tires and extra ground clearance, all yours for the asking price of $53,000. The Overland takes the off-road recipe and reintroduces some luxury into things, with prices starting at $55,900. Deliveries could start as early as the end of this year…

What Does “Trailhawk” Mean On Jeeps?

We’ve seen the “Trailhawk” badge and name attached to many Jeep models over the years since it first appeared on the 2012 Grand Cherokee. But what does it actually mean? On the surface, models with this trim level sport a more rugged appearance, but the real reason people buy this trim is for its off-road upgrades. The Trailhawk comes with increased ground clearance, four-wheel drive with a low-range transfer case, skid plates, and it usually comes with different drive modes to help to handle in sand, snow, and other scenarios.

No Jeep model with the Trailhawk badge is as capable as a Wrangler or Gladiator, though. Those models are built to handle the toughest terrain possible while sacrificing some other comforts. Trailhawk trims are reserved for other Jeep models that might not see trails as often.

    2027 Jeep Wagoneer S

Jeep does, of course, still produce EVs and the Wagoneer S, launched in 2024, was its first. With a 600-hp electric powertrain in a package slightly smaller than the Grand Cherokee, the Wagoneer S is the quickest Jeep ever, with a 0–60 time of just 3.4 seconds. It also sports as many as four screens in its high-tech interior and styling that is equally futuristic, but still unmistakably Jeep.

After the first two model years, the Wagoneer S was killed off for the 2026 model year, but the intention was never for this to be the end. The Wagoneer S will be resurrected for the 2027 model year, having been retired for a year so that Jeep could focus on “pacing production of the all-electric Jeep Wagoneer S to support future improvements in battery performance, software, and capability,” according to Andy Bowman, Director of Marketing and Communications.

What are these improvements to the batteries, you may ask? Well, he went on to say that the new Wagoneer S will have a North American Charging Standard (NACS) charging port which would give the Wagoneer S access to Tesla’s supercharger network. Details about improvements to battery performance will come in due time…

    2027 Jeep Grand Wagoneer REEV

Jeep has already made some significant changes to the Wagoneer lineup with the axing of the “normal” Wagoneer and merging all trims under the Grand Wagoneer name, as well as styling updates and the return of the ‘Jeep’ badge front and center after previously shunning it in favor of making it a special sub-brand.

What will likely be the biggest change for the Grand Wagoneeer, though, still hasn’t yet arrived, despite it initially being announced for this model year. It is a version of the Grand Wagoneer called the REEV, which stands for Range-Extended Electric Vehicle, and it will consist of a 3.6-liter V6, paired with a 130-kW generator, recharging a 92-kWh battery pack, leading to a total output of 647 horsepower and 620 pound-feet of torque.

With many Americans still not being convinced by pure electric vehicles, there is a great amount of interest in hybrids and extended-range electric vehicles at the moment, as they appear to offer all the benefits of electrification without any of the downsides. The Grand Wagoneer REEV would certainly provide a lot of benefits for long-range driving, with a claimed range of up to 500 miles.

And yet, at the time of writing, the only powertrain that the Grand Wagoneer is available with is the Hurricane twin-turbocharged inline-six developing 420 hp, which is perfectly adequate for most situations, but the REEV version is still nowhere to be seen, and we are all very much hoping it won’t be delayed until 2028, like its fellow REV Stellantis product, the Ramcharger. With production set to start towards the end of this year, we have our fingers crossed…

    2028 Jeep Compass

With the all-new generation of the Jeep Cherokee having been unveiled last year and now available to buy in showrooms up and down the country, we would all have expected to be able to get our hands on the all-new generation of the more compact Compass by now as well.

However, while that new Compass is now being sold elsewhere, Jeep is still flogging the first-generation Compass in the States despite it now being ten years old. Stellantis has been reluctant to sell the new one here due to tariff concerns, and the manufacturing plant in Illinois where it was supposed to be made has faced delays. It is now most likely that production will start next year for MY2028.

But what is the big deal about this new-generation Jeep Crossover? Firstly, it really is all-new, as it is based on Stellantis’ STLA Medium platform rather than the old Fiat Chrysler platform of before, and this platform allows for a wide range of different powertrains. Indeed, the compass can be had as a normal hybrid, a plug-in hybrid and a full EV, and the ever fanciful European WLTP cycle has the EV range of up to 400 miles.

    An ICE Jeep Recon?

No sooner did we finally get to drive the all-electric Jeep Recon, four years after it was initially announced, than Stellantis announced that the new off-roader would not actually remain all-electric after all. The Recon was supposed to represent Setllantis and Jeep’s commitment to electrification, with it being a high-tech trail-rated SUV with removable doors and roof just like the Wrangler. On an investor day this year, however, Stellantis executives announced that the Recon will get an internal combustion engined version in the future.

The platform the Recon is built on does indeed allow for an engine to be put in, but beyond the fact that there is the intention to stick one under the hood, we really don’t know much else, like what kind of engine or how much electrification there will be, if any. There will most likely be some, given Stellantis’ overall product plans, but whether it will be mild, traditional, or plug-in hybrid power remains to be seen. What is certain is that having some internal combustion might make the Recon a more credible alternative to the Wrangler for those concerned about long-range driving and recharging an electric off-roader. We also have no idea when an ICE-powered Recon can be expected to arrive.
