How Subaru Built An Empire On An Oddball Engine

Some brands specialize in a particular engine layout, like GM with its legendary V8 lineage. Other brands are defined by their signature engines. If we mention a boxer-four, we don’t even have to name the automaker who built it, do we? The layout’s history predates Subaru, but it’s Subaru, and Subaru alone, keeping it relevant.

2026 marks the 60th anniversary of the 977cc EA-52’s debut in the Subaru 1000. Here’s how the modern Subie came to be.

    The Flat-Four Debuted In 1966

Subaru was founded in 1953, hitting the market with the Subaru 1500, a small four-door with a 1.5-liter inline-four under the hood. At this early stage, Subaru mostly ran on small two and four-cylinder inlines. The boxer was still more than a decade away.

The brand’s signature flat-four first hit the market in the Subaru 1000, first produced from 1966 to 1969. The 1000 was front-engine, front-wheel drive, and it holds a special place in Japanese automotive history, not just for its engine layout, but because it was the first official compact car, according to government classification.

The flat-four engine helped Subaru to stand out in Japan’s booming post-war car industry. In the second half of the 1960s, passenger car sales in the country jumped from 590,000 units in 1965, to 2.37 million units in 1970. The Subaru 1000 wasn’t the brand’s first major hit. That would be the 1958 Subaru 360 “Ladybug,” selling 392,000 units as the “people’s car.” But, the Subaru 1000’s 83,696 sales helped to establish the brand outside the kei car segment.

Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive Debuted In 1972

It took Subaru 13 years to come up with the flat-four engine. It took the brand just six more years to land on symmetrical all-wheel drive. The brand first debuted the system in the 1972 Subaru Leone Wagon, which featured optional part-time SAWD.

Full-time SAWD debuted in 1986 in the naturally-aspirated version of the Subaru XT, a 2+2 coupe. You could say that this is the car in which everything finally came together, packing a 1.8-liter flat-four, but, in our book, it’s gotta be a wagon or an SUV to truly be what people think of when they hear “Subaru.” So we would name the first-gen Subaru Legacy station wagon, introduced in 1989 for the 1990 model year, as the Subie that really put all the pieces together, with a range of flat-four engines, available full-time SAWD, and a folding rear bench seat.

    Why Go With A Flat-Four?

The unique configuration sees the cylinders in an opposed, 180-degree layout, forming an H-shape, rather than a V or being configured in a straight line. The boxer name is said to refer to the fact that you have the cylinders punching in and out sorta like Rock’em Sock’em Robots. That makes sense to us.

At this point, the boxer is part of Subaru’s identity, and the automaker almost has to stick with the engine layout as a critical component to the brand. But, the flat-four offers a number of practical benefits, as well as helping Subaru to stand out among other Japanese automakers. It also comes with its share of drawbacks. To go over some of the big pros and cons.

    • Pro: A flat-four is naturally better-balanced than most other engine configurations, with the movement of one cylinder canceling out the weight of the other.
    • Pro: Boxers have a lower center of gravity. They’re called flat-fours because the cylinders literally lie flat, distributing the weight broadly rather than standing up as in an inline or V-shaped engine.
    • Pro: Flat-four engines are regarded to be safer in the event of an accident. Because they’re placed low in the engine compartment, they can slide out under the car rather than shooting through the cabin like a missile.
    • Con: Flat-fours are inherently more complex to build and repair. For instance, a straight-four only requires one cylinder head, while a boxer requires two.
    • Con: The greater width needs to be accommodated in the design process, ensuring the engine bay can house the powerplant.
    • Con: Flat-fours are well-balanced, but still tend to rock around the axis, given the back-and-forth motion of the pistons.

No engine is without its disadvantages, but, as far as Subaru and its fans are concerned, the pluses far outweigh the minuses. Ultimately, it all works together beautifully when paired with symmetrical AWD in an SUV. Whether you’re handling tight corners in rough weather, or exploring winding mountain roads with some chunky all-terrain tires equipped, the excellent balance and low center of gravity inherent to a Subaru have allowed the brand to carve out a niche as an affordable, exceptionally-capable family car.

Flat-Four Cars Date Back More Than A Century

No automaker is more closely associated with flat-four engines than Subaru, but the technology dates back to the end of the 19th Century. The 1897 Benz Contra-Engine, designed by Karl Banz, used horizontally opposed cylinders to power racecars. A 20-hp 5.4-liter flat-four would follow in 1900. A year later, the 1901 Wilson-Pilcher, a London-built luxury car, featured a water-cooled 2.4-liter flat-four.

Perhaps the best-known pre-Subaru flat-four would be the Ferdinand Posrche-designed powerplant found in the 1938 Volkswagen Beetle, an air-cooled engine that would go on to power millions of bugs. Porsche has, of course, kept building flat engines ever since, although the German automaker may be more closely associated with flat-six engines than flat-fours. Volkswagen, on the other hand, has long since phased these engines out.

As with a Subaru, a Porsche benefits from the low center of gravity and balanced motion of a flat engine. The flat engines are a big part of why Porsche is considered the premier driver-first automaker.

Subaru Has A Lot To Celebrate In 2026

2026 Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid Brown Side in NatureSubaru

Subaru celebrated 15 million boxers built for the engine’s 50th birthday. A conservative estimate would easily put that number above 20 million engines by today.

For the engine’s 60th anniversary, Subaru brought the flat-six back in the 2026 Subaru BRZ GT300 race car, and has been running retrospective campaigns commemorating everything it’s accomplished over the years. This covers everything from 1995-1997 World Rally Championship manufacturer titles to legendary road cars like the Impreza 22B STI.

As the brand’s Japanese website puts it, “Loved and supported by everyone for 60 years, the Subaru Boxer will continue to run into the future.”

The day when combustion engines become a niche product, designed only for hardcore enthusiasts and specialized motor sports, may be inevitable. In the meantime, the boxer engine proves just how long you can run on a great idea.

Subaru, And The Boxer Engine, Are Still Going Strong

    2027 Subaru BRZ JDMSubaru

Subaru sold 643,591 vehicles in total in the US last year. This was actually a 3.6% dip from the year prior, but hardly what anyone would call a sales slump. The Subaru Crosstrek saw a 5.5% year-over-year sales bump to 191,724 units sold, and the Legacy jumped by 13.5%, to 22,212 sales. Both of these models are powered by boxer engines, proving that the powerplant is still as relevant as ever in an era of EVs and hybrids.

In a sense, one could easily argue that the boxer engine was ahead of its time. A big part of the appeal of EVs is that the weight is distributed along the floor of the vehicle, ensuring a low center of gravity and solid cornering, just like you’ll get with a boxer-four.

Subaru announced 20 million all-wheel drive vehicles in 2021, and the brand is estimated to have built anywhere from 25 million to 30 million units in total, worldwide. We have no doubt the brand can build another 30 million or so in the next 60 years.
