Move Over Ferrari Breadvan, Here Comes An Even Cooler Shooting Brake

Porsche and the shooting brake are two things that are catnip to auto enthusiasts. Now one car builder has combined the two, turning a less-loved classic into a car that is truly special.

And if you’re going to build a Porsche Shooting Brake, why not start with one that’s already got a hatch?

The CarPoint GT-K44 is the answer to that question. The starting point is a Porsche 944 S2 that has been stunningly and completely transformed with new bodywork all around the back.

Even though the 944 is a hatch, this is an extensive conversion. The entire rear body structure of the factory car has been reworked, with the roofline extended and new quarter panels and pillars to fit the new lines and the new windows. It even adds a third brake light and the new back window comes with a proper wiper.

Instead of a hatch, the car now has a tailgate. The panel drops down between the lights, giving it better access and even more cargo space. Cargo space you can reach out into instead of over into. CarPoint calls it practical, but it’s hard to imagine loading much into the back of this stunning creation. Still, CarPoint kept the rear seats, so this 944 will haul the kids and the groceries — if your kids are short and patient, at least.

Usually acomprehensive reimagininglike this one comes with substantial horsepower under the hood, but not this time. The S2’s standard 3.0-liter four-cylinder sits between the fenders, making its 211 factory horsepower. You’re not limited to that engine, though. CarPoint plans to build a limited run of these cars, and you can start with a 250 hp Turbo car as well. Plus, there are plenty of places that can help you pack even more power under the hood of a 944.

Instead of outright grunt, this stock-mechanical conversion focuses on style and customization. The Shooting Brake rear delivers the style, but CarPoint’s ability to use a wide range of vintage Porsche fabrics, install Turbo seats, and add modern tech make the car truly personal to its new owner.

The project was inspired by a ride CarPoint founder Andreas Freund had in the mid-1980s. It was a Porsche 924 Turbo that had similarly been turned into a wagon. The founder of the Porsche restoration and unobtanium parts company worked with former TechArt and Gemballa designer Michael Söhngen to make it happen.

CarPoint plans to build more of these cars. The first one needed “several hundred hours” of bodywork to complete, so hopefully the next ones will need less. The price tag starts from 100,000 euros, around $113,000, on top of your donor car.

CarBuzz Insight – Why This Matters:

The 944 is an unloved Porsche, so hacking it up to make something new doesn’t feel as wrong as it does with, say, a Singer 911. It helps that the result is this gorgeous car, possibly the best example of a shooting brake since the Ferrari 250 GT Breadvan.

We’ll let you fight that one out in the comments.
