Only One Luxury Car Builds A Better Seat Than The Ram 1500, And It Costs $65,000

Turns out, segment-crushing seating quality isn’t defined by the badge on your hood, but rather, it’s engineered directly into an everyday pickup truck. Next time you sink into your $120,000 S-Class, try not to think about the driver of the Ram 1500 idling next to you at the traffic light. According to the latest JD Power seating satisfaction study, that pickup’s seats earn a higher rating than the pricey German throne at your backside. In fact, they scored better than almost anything else on the road, save for a single German luxury model (it’s a BMW).

If you’re a savvy shopper looking to spend smart in 2026, add this data to the growing list of reliability and satisfaction metrics proving luxury nameplates aren’t always money well spent. More often than not, you’ll be happier pocketing the cash and sticking to the mainstream.

When It Comes To Seating, Ram Is On A Roll

According to JD Power, seat quality is measured by the number of problems and level of satisfaction experienced per 100 vehicles (PP100) during the first 90 days of ownership, with a lower score reflecting higher quality. Lower points mean happier owners in this study, and few owners are happier with their seats than owners of the Ram 1500. Not only is this pickup the highest-scoring mainstream model in the land, but Ram has enjoyed near-total dominance in the Mass Market Truck/Van segment by holding down the #1 spot in four out of the past five years.

    2026 Ram 1500 towingRam

Specifically, in 2022, Ram ranked in the number-one position at 4.6 PP100, followed by a first-place 5.4 PP100 in 2023. In 2024, a best-yet score of 4.1 PP100 once again secured first-place position, though the GMC Canyon booted Ram off the podium in 2025. For 2026, Ram reclaimed its number-one spot with a best-yet score of 3.5 PP100.

If you’re following along, that means scoring has been improving year over year, and that it continues to move in a positive direction with a lower numerical trouble count. Ram missed the podium for a year, but set the benchmark for the remaining four, meaning this is far from a fluke. In fact, there’s just one vehicle in the entire industry with a higher seating score than a Ram 1500, and we’ll meet it a little further down the page.

Before we do, it’s worth noting JD Power APEAL Study data here as well. Though fewer seat problems don’t automatically guarantee a high emotional connection and associated scoring, looking back over five years of data reveals an interesting alignment: between 2020 and 2023, Dodge and Ram owned the very top of the APEAL mass-market rankings, with Dodge capturing #1 overall for four consecutive years and Ram hot on its tail in the #2 spot each time.

Though Mini barged in to claim the overall mass-market brand crown from 2024 through 2026, Ram remained a persistent front-runner, taking second overall in 2024 before the Ram 1500 went on to capture another outright APEAL segment award in 2026. Shoppers can take that to mean that two major studies confirm owners love how their Rams make them feel.

Just One Car Has Better Seats, But Only Two, and It’s $65,000

    2026 BMW Z4 M40i Final Edition ExteriorBMW

In the 2026 Seat Quality and Satisfaction Study, the mass-market Ram 1500 earned an incredible score of just 3.5 problems per 100 vehicles (PP100). Across every segment surveyed in this year’s study, which includes responses from nearly 80,000 owners, exactly one vehicle on the road posted a better score: the BMW Z4, logging a 3.1 PP100 to finish ahead of the Ram 1500.

That’s it. That’s the entire list of vehicles with higher-rated seats. The chairs in every other luxury nameplate you can think of were outperformed by a pickup truck when it comes to quality and satisfaction. Volvo, maker of some of the most comfortable seats in the business, could manage no better than a 4.0 PP100 for its V60 wagon.

In part, that’s because comfort alone doesn’t win this competition. The world’s pinnacle premium car, the Mercedes S-Class, also earned a 4.0 PP100 score to tie directly with models like the Hyundai Santa Cruz, Volvo V60, and GMC Canyon.

    • Subaru Outback (Mass Market Midsize/Large SUV, 2023, 2025)
    • Volkswagen Golf (Mass Market Small/Compact Car, 2023, 2026)

Audi’s top performer over the past two years, the A5, sat at 3.8 PP100 in 2024 and dropped to 5.1 PP100 in 2025. Even Porsche’s legendary Cayenne, which swept its segment four times, managed a 3.9 PP100 in 2026, trailing the Ram 1500.

It’s an impressive feat for a pickup truck. Across the entire five-year timeline we’re covering here, only one other pickup ever managed to secure multi-year podium wins: the Chevrolet Silverado HD. While the heavy-duty Chevy came in third place each year with scores hovering between 5.4 and 7.5 PP100, the Ram 1500 captured four outright segment wins with its best-yet score of 3.5 PP100 arriving in 2026’s data.

To summarize: Ram isn’t just equipping a great truck seat — it’s equipping what’s statistically one of the most trouble-free seating systems in the modern auto industry.

Lexus, Cadillac, And Lincoln Have Never Won A Seat Quality Podium – Even While Their Sister Brands Dominate

    2025 – 2026 Ram 1500 exteriorRam

Today’s savvy shopper knows full well that spending more money no longer guarantees a more satisfying or dependable ownership experience, and now, it no longer guarantees a better seating experience, either.

The latest Seat Quality and Satisfaction Study confirmed that vehicle seat quality in premium brands has lagged behind mass-market vehicles for five consecutive years. While seat quality improved industry-wide to 10.0 PP100 (an improvement of 0.9 PP100 from 2025), the quality gap between premium and mainstream seats shrank to 0.7 PP100, cut nearly in half from 1.3 PP100 the year prior.

Historically, luxury automakers justified their price premiums with exclusive comfort technology, though mass-market manufacturers have successfully integrated advanced features like multi-setting memory and massage functions without the accompanying defect rates, meaning mainstream vehicles are racking up even more wins. This includes the Ford Mustang leading the Mass Market Midsize/Large Car segment with 6.1 PP100.

The Genesis Paradox: How A Top-Ranked Brand Never Won A Single Seat Quality Award

    • Overall Industry Gains: Average defects dropped to 175 PP100 (down from 192 PP100 in 2025).
    • Nine of 10 Categories Improved: Mechanicals, exterior assembly, and interior fit improved across the board.
    • Infotainment Woes: The only category where problems increased, driven by persistent wireless Apple CarPlay/Android Auto connectivity bugs and touchscreen frustration.
    • Hardware vs Software: While glitchy screens continue to alienate buyers, physical assemblies, especially seating, are where automakers are actually mastering quality.
    • Porsche Sweeps: Ranked #1 overall across the entire industry in IQS (138 PP100), mirroring its strong seat quality showing for the Cayenne (3.9 PP100).
    • The Genesis Paradox: Clinched #2 overall in IQS (151 PP100), yet earned zero seat quality podiums over the past five years.

Looking across the 2022–2026 JD Power Seat Quality and Satisfaction Study data, nine luxury brands managed at least one podium finish: Porsche, BMW, Audi, Infiniti, Land Rover, Jaguar, Mercedes-Benz, Volvo, and Acura. What’s more interesting is the brands that never showed up once in the past five years, which include some major players.

Lexus is a glaring absence in the past five years of data, even as parent Toyota collected multiple podiums with models like the 4Runner, Corolla, and Prius. Cadillac also logged zero top-three finishes, even as Chevrolet and GMC earned a combined 16 podium placements along the same timeline. Ford earned medals for four models in the past five years, but Lincoln earned none. Genesis? No podium appearances, even while Kia and Hyundai collected 17 podiums.

As luxury automobiles are being handily outperformed by mainstream offerings in terms of dependability, quality, and satisfaction, even a premium seating experience is no longer guaranteed when you spend top dollar.
