At first glance, Tesla’s new Emergency Drive Away feature looks almost like a joke or some kind of staged demonstration acting as click bait. A Tesla is sitting at a Supercharger, still plugged in, the driver shifts into Drive, and the car simply pulls away while the charging cable tears free. Then liquid starts pouring out of the severed cable. It looks ridiculous until you realize Tesla is completely serious. The new emergency-only feature is designed to let a driver escape a dangerous situation without first having to get out of the vehicle and disconnect the charger.

Normally, a Tesla will not allow the driver to shift out of Park while it is connected to a Supercharger. Emergency Drive Away overrides that safeguard after the driver confirms an on-screen warning, allowing the vehicle to move while the cable is still attached. Tesla introduced the feature for U.S. Superchargers through software update 2026.38.3, and the company has made it very clear that this is intended as a last-resort safety measure. It is not a clever shortcut for someone who forgot to unplug before leaving.

That dramatic liquid spray seen in Tesla’s demonstration is also real, but it is not battery fluid or anything coming from the vehicle. Tesla says the liquid is glycol, which is used as coolant inside the liquid-cooled Supercharger cable. When the cable is forcibly separated, the cooling system is damaged and the glycol can spill onto the pavement. Tesla says the affected Supercharger requires a mandatory service visit afterward for repair and cleanup, while the vehicle also needs service to inspect and repair its charge port.

The reason Tesla is warning owners so strongly becomes obvious once the potential repair bill enters the picture. The company says electrical and civil repairs to a damaged Supercharger can cost as much as $25,000 depending on the installation. The Tesla itself does not escape unharmed either, since the charge port requires mandatory service after using the feature, and Tesla has not disclosed how much that repair could cost. What remains unclear is exactly who pays the Supercharger repair bill when the feature is used during a legitimate emergency.

Tesla has been more specific about what happens if someone abuses the system. The company says deliberate misuse will bring additional penalties, although it has not explained what those penalties are or how much they could cost. Tesla can also receive short camera recordings associated with an Emergency Drive Away event, giving the company some ability to determine what happened. So while the feature may look amusing for about two seconds in a demonstration video, the reality is much more serious. Emergency Drive Away is essentially Tesla giving owners permission to break the car and charger if getting away immediately matters more than saving the hardware, and that is exactly the kind of feature you hope you never have to use.
