In a world of delicate supply chains and just-in-time manufacturing, disruptions tend to have a major impact on automakers’ production output. The recent chip shortage is perhaps the most notable example of this, but even smaller, more localized bottlenecks can still cause big problems for manufacturers. So much so that industry experts have started questioning whether just-in-time practices are actually the way to go.
And that leads us to Ford’s current predicament. Last year, the company was faced with a severe aluminum shortage following multiple fires at its supplier’s plant. It didn’t even have the chance to fully recover after that Novelis incident, and more problems are already hampering its production capacity once again.

According to a report from Reuters, production at the Dearborn Truck Plant near Detroit, Michigan has been paused since Thursday, September 24. It is expected to stay this way until September 29, meaning close to a full week of complete inactivity on the assembly line. Clearly, that’s a big problem for Blue Oval, because the facility typically handles a substantial share of total F-150 production.
The Kansas City Assembly Plant is said to be canceling certain shifts, as well, which exacerbates the issue since it would normally ramp up production when Dearborn’s output is weak to compensate (and vice versa). As you can imagine, this whole ordeal is costing Ford dearly, but the root cause of it all isn’t entirely clear.

Reuters has been in touch with anonymous sources inside the company and was told this matter stems from a supply chain shortage. No further details about the disruption have been provided, but the news agency did learn that it apparently doesn’t have to do with the previous aluminum mishap. That’s pretty much all we know for the time being, though.
What we can say for sure is that Ford needs to find a solution sooner rather than later, as even a few days of paused production can really do a number on F-150 sales. They’d already dropped by 11% year-over-year across the F-Series lineup in August, and this new hurdle is a serious obstacle on their path to recovery.
