The heavy-duty pickup truck horsepower war just got considerably more interesting. General Motors has revealed the refreshed 2027 Chevrolet Silverado HD and GMC Sierra HD, and the headline attraction is an enormous new 8.3-liter Duramax turbo-diesel V8. Internally known as Mongoose, the new diesel produces 555 horsepower and a staggering 1,230 lb-ft of torque, giving GM a serious new weapon in the ongoing battle among Chevrolet, GMC, Ford, and Ram for heavy-duty truck bragging rights.
That 8.3-liter diesel represents a substantial step up from the outgoing 6.6-liter Duramax, and it will be offered as the premium engine choice in both the Silverado HD and Sierra HD. Buyers who prefer gasoline power are not being ignored, either. GM has updated its 6.6-liter gas V8 to produce 412 horsepower and 472 lb-ft of torque, along with improvements to cooling, lubrication, and intake airflow designed specifically for the demanding workloads these trucks regularly face. Both engines are paired with an Allison 10-speed automatic transmission, keeping one of the more familiar pieces of GM’s heavy-duty powertrain formula in place.
All that additional muscle would not mean much without improved towing capability, and GM has raised the numbers accordingly. Properly equipped 2027 Silverado HD and Sierra HD models can tow as much as 20,000 pounds using a conventional hitch, while gooseneck configurations can handle up to 38,000 pounds. Diesel-powered dually models can be configured to tow at least 30,000 pounds, while the 2500 HD lineup tops out at 23,200 pounds. These are the sorts of numbers that matter to owners pulling large equipment trailers, fifth-wheel campers, horse trailers, and other loads where torque and stability are far more important than an impressive zero-to-60 time.
Perhaps the more interesting change for everyday driving happens underneath the truck. GM is replacing the traditional recirculating-ball steering system with an electrically assisted rack-and-pinion setup, a significant departure in the heavy-duty pickup segment. GM says the new system provides roughly 30 percent more assist than the previous hydraulic arrangement while promising improved steering precision. The trucks also gain electronic brake boost, 14.6-inch front brake rotors, four-piston front calipers, revised rear brake hardware, and changes intended to deliver a more progressive brake pedal feel. That combination could make these massive pickups feel noticeably more manageable, particularly when maneuvering or controlling a heavy trailer.
The refreshed 2027 Chevrolet Silverado HD and GMC Sierra HD are expected to reach dealerships before the end of 2026, with pricing to be announced closer to their arrival. While the giant new Duramax will understandably grab most of the attention, the broader changes suggest GM is trying to improve more than a specification sheet. More towing capability, stronger engines, modernized steering, and upgraded braking could make the new trucks easier to live with while preserving the brute-force capability heavy-duty buyers expect. Still, there is no getting around the star of the show: an 8.3-liter turbo-diesel V8 making 1,230 lb-ft of torque is the kind of wonderfully excessive engineering that keeps America’s heavy-duty truck rivalry so entertaining.
