Honda To Invest $2.5 Billion Into New US Plant, But Where Will It Open?

America is Honda’s biggest market, with around 40% of the automaker’s total sales generated by US customers. So, naturally, Honda has a big presence in the States with no fewer than eight manufacturing facilities and a huge workforce numbering tens of thousands. But, even so, the company is grappling with a bit of a capacity issue at the moment.

To be more specific, the problem is that all its North American plants are operating at maximum capacity, which calls for an expansion plan and, ultimately, more jobs for American workers. Honda is now getting close to a final decision on where this new facility should be built, and everything should be up and running by 2030.

The Most Likely Beneficiary Of Honda’s $2.5 Billion Investment

With negotiations entering their final stages, it seems like the state of Ohio will be the one to host this future assembly plant. Its primary function will be hybrid vehicle manufacturing, and Honda plans to invest around $2.5 billion into it according to Nikkei Asia. Given its recent shift away from EVs in favor of hybrids, opening this new manufacturing center maps rather cleanly onto the automaker’s broader strategy.

It would also go a long way in mitigating the damage caused by import tariffs, while giving Honda the room it needs to bolster US sales. And although we’re not completely certain it’ll be based in Ohio just yet, it would make perfect sense for the company to establish its ninth American assembly plant close to other core facilities for improved supply chain efficiency.

Why Is Ohio The Ideal Place For Honda To Expand Its Manufacturing Capacity?

Ohio is already home to Honda’s biggest engine plant globally, as well as its Marysville and East Liberty assembly facilities among other installations. In fact, the state has long been the carmaker’s primary base of operations in America, with Marysville hosting its very first US manufacturing complex since 1979.

As such, Honda’s footprint in Ohio is firmly established, and we’d be very surprised if the company has a change of heart and decides to open its new production center elsewhere. That seems extremely unlikely, but we will only know for sure once a final decision is announced.

CarBuzz Insight – Why This Matters:

Even though Honda has been going through a bit of a rough patch lately, its willingness to invest in a new factory may suggest the situation isn’t as critical as some would have you believe. That’s not to say it’s all sunshine and rainbows, as pulling the plug on its EV ambitions was indeed a very costly move. But, for now, the automaker seems able to ride the waves pretty well.

Besides that, more jobs for hard-working Americans are most certainly a great thing whether they’re created in Ohio or elsewhere. And with all that being said, it’s refreshing to hear some good news at a time when the automotive industry is full of doom and gloom, so we’ll be keeping an eye on what comes of Honda’s plans in the future.
