Mercedes-AMG has taken the CLE Coupe and pushed it far beyond the usual special-edition formula with the new CLE 646 Spezialanfertigung. This ultra-limited Mythos Series model was created with one overriding goal, maximum driving involvement. The result is a 637-horsepower, rear-wheel-drive coupe with a radically reworked chassis, extensive carbon fiber, serious aerodynamic hardware, and roughly 375 pounds removed compared with the donor car. Only 30 examples will be built, and every one was already spoken for before the car made its public debut.

The transformation starts with AMG’s M177 EVO 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8, tuned to produce 637 horsepower and 627 lb-ft of torque. Unlike the standard CLE 53, which uses a turbocharged inline-six and all-wheel drive, the Spezialanfertigung sends all of its power exclusively to the rear axle through a nine-speed AMG SPEEDSHIFT TCT transmission. A flat-plane crankshaft helps the V8 rev more freely, while a titanium-heavy exhaust system developed with Akrapovič gives the car a more aggressive soundtrack and trims additional weight.

Performance is predictably serious. Mercedes-AMG says the CLE 646 Spezialanfertigung can reach 62 mph in 3.9 seconds, 124 mph in 11.4 seconds, and continue to a top speed of 193 mph. More important than the straight-line numbers, though, is the effort AMG put into making the car feel sharper and more communicative. The switch to rear-wheel drive is backed up by an electronically controlled limited-slip differential and a nine-stage traction control system designed for track use with stability control switched off.

The chassis has been heavily reengineered as well. AMG worked with KW Automotive to develop a four-way adjustable coilover suspension that allows separate low-speed and high-speed compression and rebound tuning. The body shell has also been reinforced, widened by 2.4 inches at both ends, and fitted with an integrated roll bar to increase torsional rigidity. Massive ceramic brakes sit behind 20-inch forged wheels wrapped in 305-section front and 335-section rear tires, giving the car the mechanical hardware to match its dramatic appearance.

That wide-body look is functional, not just cosmetic. Carbon fiber is used extensively for the hood, front fenders, side sills, roof, rear apron, diffuser, trunk lid, and manually adjustable rear wing. Polycarbonate rear glass and a lighter 12-volt battery contribute to the weight reduction effort, while the wider body creates room for the enormous wheel and tire package. The front diffuser can also be manually switched between Street and Race positions, with the latter increasing front downforce for circuit driving.

Aerodynamics play an unusually large role for a road-legal Mercedes coupe. The adjustable front diffuser, rear wing, fender louvers, underbody treatment, and dedicated airflow channels work together to generate more than 550 pounds of downforce at top speed. AMG even engineered airflow around the headlights and through the wheel arches to improve brake cooling and increase aerodynamic load. This is clearly not a styling exercise built around a bigger spoiler and some decals.

Inside, the same weight-conscious philosophy continues. The rear seats are gone, acoustic insulation has been reduced, the audio system is simplified, and several comfort and driver-assistance systems have been deleted. Lightweight racing bucket seats, carbon fiber door panels, a motorsport-style microfiber steering wheel, and an integrated roll bar dominate the cabin. An optional Performance Package adds six-point harnesses for buyers who plan to make serious use of the car on closed circuits.

The CLE 646 Spezialanfertigung also connects AMG’s current performance ambitions with its past. Each car is hand-built in Affalterbach using a CLE 53 as its starting point, following a tradition that stretches back to legendary cars such as the AMG 300 CE 6.0 “Hammer.” It is also only the second model in the Mercedes-Benz Mythos Series after the PureSpeed, which was limited to 250 units worldwide.

At 4,178 pounds, the Spezialanfertigung is hardly a featherweight in the traditional sports-car sense, but it represents a very different kind of AMG from the increasingly electrified and technology-heavy machines we have seen in recent years. A big V8, rear-wheel drive, manual aerodynamic adjustments, stripped-back equipment, and a highly adjustable suspension make this one of the most focused modern AMGs yet. The fact that all 30 cars were sold before the world premiere suggests Mercedes-AMG had little trouble finding buyers who wanted exactly that.
