Toyota’s newest electric crossover is already facing an early recall. Nearly 10,000 examples of the 2026 Toyota C-HR EV are being recalled across North America because of a software issue that can allow the regenerative braking system to put too much energy back into an already highly charged battery. Under certain conditions, that can cause the electric drive system to shut down and leave the vehicle without drive power.

The problem centers on the Battery Electric Vehicle Electronic Control Unit and how it manages regenerative braking when the traction battery is near a high state of charge. Regenerative braking normally recovers energy as the vehicle slows and sends it back to the battery, but the software issue can allow the battery to become overcharged. Toyota says the resulting system response can lead to a loss of motive power, which could increase the risk of a crash if it happens while traveling at higher speeds.

The recall is especially notable because the C-HR EV is still a very new addition to Toyota’s growing electric lineup. The 2026 model arrived with standard all-wheel drive, 338 horsepower, a 74.7-kWh battery, and an estimated driving range of up to 290 miles. It also features multiple levels of driver-adjustable regenerative braking through steering wheel-mounted paddles, making that system an important part of how the C-HR manages energy during everyday driving.

Toyota says owners of affected vehicles are expected to receive notification by early November. The fix should be relatively straightforward, with dealerships updating the software for the vehicle’s battery control system at no charge to owners. Since the recall population represents a sizable portion of the C-HR EVs currently on North American roads, owners of 2026 models should pay close attention to recall notices and check their VIN once Toyota’s campaign information is fully available.

Software-related recalls have become increasingly common as modern vehicles rely more heavily on electronic control systems, and EVs add another layer of complexity with sophisticated battery and energy-management programming. The good news for C-HR owners is that this particular issue does not appear to require replacing any major hardware. A software update should correct the problem, but the potential for a sudden loss of drive power makes this one recall that affected owners should not ignore.
