Lexus has recently killed off some of its sportiest models from the RF to the LC. This doesn’t seem to be a total retreat from performance, though. A new LFA is on the way, and it seems that even the RX SUV will get a hot variant. These will join the existing LBX Morizo RR, a plush GR Corolla, and apparently Lexus isn’t done with that model either.
Spy shots from the Nürburgring suggest that Lexus is working on an even more intense LBX.

Changes to this model are subtle at first glance, but significant, starting with a more pronounced splitter that should reduce lift. Also, the roof is covered, suggesting that Lexus may have fitted a lightweight carbon fiber skin like on the GR Corolla Morizo Edition.

Down the side we can see slightly extended side skirts that match the front splitter. Lexus also covered up the fender flares, which could mean they’re a bit larger to accommodate wider wheels and tires, but we can’t tell for sure from these images.
The rear also has a few subtle changes. The rear wing looks to be reshaped with some new air passages in the middle, and the rear bumper has definitely received some attention. It seems as though the lower bumper garnish has its own air pass-through not present on the standard model.

The modest exterior changes all seem focused on functional aerodynamics and reduced weight, and we suspect those will be some of the main performance upgrades. Some suspension changes and maybe even driveline upgrades will probably be the focus, rather than big power, similar to the recent GR Corolla GRMN.

We doubt that this hotter Morizo RR will go to quite the same lengths as that Corolla in the performance department; specifically not losing the rear seats. However, it will probably command a high price and likely a limited production number. We’re also not expecting it to come to America, since we don’t currently get the regular LBX.

Prototype performance Lexus models like this LBX and the RX that we also saw this week, make it clear that Lexus is serious about offering performance models again. The company has made attempts at performance vehicles with the F brand, but it has been inconsistent about offering full F models across its lineup. The fact that it’s exploring performance SUVs suggests that Lexus is finally meeting the market where it is.

It’s important for Lexus to compete in the luxury performance segment for a couple of reasons. For one, it’s a staple of the establishment luxury brands from Germany, and any serious competitor should be able to match them. Additionally, a healthy performance line can be lucrative. They can attract buyers that might not be interested in a Lexus otherwise, and they often have higher transaction prices with the potential for bigger profits.
Even though this extra-spicy LBX Morizo RR may not be directly relevant to the US, it’s a sign that Lexus wants to build fun cars, and hopefully that extends to more models, including some that could come Stateside.
