The automotive industry is notoriously difficult to break into as a newcomer, and things were no different for Rivian. Since its arrival on the scene, the company has faced countless setbacks, massive financial pressure, and more than its fair share of criticism. Rivian is still hanging on for dear life today, but we’re finally seeing signs that its fortunes might start turn around despite ongoing struggles.
Sales in the second quarter of 2026 have doubled compared to the same period last year, and the company’s balance sheets are starting to look a little healthier. Besides that, Rivian’s new R2 electric crossover reached its first customers back in June and is making a solid first impression. And with the automaker projecting around 65,000 to 70,000 vehicles sold this year, there are numerous reasons to be optimistic about the future. But the hard times may not be over just yet.
Rivian Has A New Problem To Deal With

Although the manufacturer seems to be on an upward trajectory, the upcoming departure of a key figure in its ranks isn’t exactly ideal at this time. In a recent press release, Rivian announced that Claire McDonough will be stepping down from her role as chief financial officer after nearly six years with the company.
Apparently, she plans on moving back to the East Coast to be closer to her family and pursue new opportunities there. Whether or not there’s anything more than that to her departure is unknown at this time. Judging from the company’s press release, there doesn’t seem to be any hint of animosity.
“Claire joined Rivian almost six years ago, and she’s had a meaningful impact on our business and overall execution,” said Scaringe. “Beyond her work on our capital roadmap, Claire has been a trusted leader and partner across the organization.” McDonough’s words were just as kind.
“Serving as Rivian’s CFO alongside RJ and this exceptional team has been the highlight of my career. I am tremendously proud of everything we have accomplished together,” she explains. “As I step away for a new opportunity and to be closer to my family on the East Coast, I do so with absolute confidence in Rivian’s trajectory, mission, and leadership team.”
How Will Rivian Navigate The CFO’s Exit?

McDonough’s departure won’t be immediate. She will be staying with Rivian until October 30 to ensure a smooth transition of strategic initiatives. Then, vice president of finance Derek Mulvey will step in as interim CFO until the company finds a suitable candidate to fit the bill.
“I’m thrilled that Derek is taking on the interim CFO role,” Scaringe said. “Derek has worked incredibly closely with me, Claire and our leadership team for several years and will enable a seamless transition.”
CarBuzz Insight – Why This Matters:
Claire McDonough might be departing from Rivian on good terms, but the awkward timing does raise some questions regarding the company’s future. Will the company’s finances continue trending upward under Mulvey, or will they stall as it tries to find a replacement for McDonough? And how much of an impact will this really have on its prospects for growth? Only time will tell, so we’ll be keeping a close eye on what Rivian is up to in the near future.
Rivian’s next investor earnings call is scheduled for November 3.
