Ford has issued two separate safety recalls covering nearly 160,000 vehicles over problems that could potentially leave drivers without motive power. While both campaigns involve a similar worst-case outcome, the underlying defects are completely unrelated. The larger recall affects 148,663 Ford Mustang models from the 2024 through 2026 model years, while a second recall covers 10,001 examples of the 2026 Ford Bronco, Bronco Sport, Explorer, Ranger and Mustang. Fortunately, Ford already has repair plans in place for both issues.
The much larger Mustang recall centers on ground eyelets used with the engine compartment wiring harness. The eyelets can potentially fracture after repeated vehicle vibration, with Ford identifying heat-shrink adhesive around the connection as a contributing factor that can place additional bending stress on the component. Exactly what happens afterward depends on which ground connection fails. In the most serious situation, a Mustang could lose drive power entirely. Other possible symptoms include inoperative headlights, windshield washer operation, air conditioning or the engine cooling fan. Ford’s solution is relatively straightforward, with dealers replacing the affected ground eyelets with revised components.
The second recall involves Ford’s familiar 2.3-liter EcoBoost four-cylinder engine, but the underlying problem is considerably more mechanical. Certain pistons may contain cracks near the point where a nickel-resistant insert meets the surrounding aluminum. Ford traced the defect to a supplier’s machining process, where a loose nut allowed tooling to occasionally make contact with the insert and compromise the bond. A damaged piston can eventually fail, potentially resulting in a misfire, unusual engine noises, an illuminated check-engine light and, ultimately, a loss of drive power.
Ford had identified 22 related 2.3-liter engine failures at its manufacturing facilities as of August 12, along with two field failures that may be connected to the same defect. Dealers will inspect vehicles included in the recall population for evidence of the piston cracking problem. Any vehicle that fails inspection will receive a replacement engine long block containing updated pistons. That is a substantial repair, but importantly for owners, recall-related repairs are performed at no charge. Dealer notifications have already started, while additional remedy notifications are expected later this year.
For owners, these recalls are another good reminder that even relatively new vehicles should occasionally be checked for outstanding safety campaigns. Mustang owners have the largest population to watch here, but anyone driving a 2026 Bronco, Bronco Sport, Explorer, Ranger or Mustang equipped with the affected 2.3-liter EcoBoost engine should also verify their vehicle’s status. The easiest way is to enter the vehicle’s 17-character VIN into NHTSA’s recall lookup system or contact a Ford dealer. Considering that both defects have the potential to interrupt propulsion while driving, this is one recall notice owners should not leave sitting unopened on the kitchen counter.
