Ford Just Recalled Nearly Every Mustang Built In The Last Three Years

Ford has just announced it is recalling all the Mustangs. Well, maybe not all, but we’re pretty sure that almost every seventh-generation Mustang is affected by this new problem. Nearly 150,000 pony cars from 2024 through 2026 could have a wiring problem in the engine compartment.

There’s no mention of a fire risk, but the problem could lead to a host of various components not working, including the engine.

Too Much Shrink Could Cause Broken Connections

In recall documents filed with the NHTSA, Ford reported that the problem occurred when it added heat shrink wrap to certain parts of the car’s wiring harness. Ford added it to the engine compartment wiring when it started building the 2024 Ford Mustang, though the company didn’t identify why it made the change.

The heat shrink on some of the cars can interfere with the eyelet terminals that attach ground wires to the car’s chassis. It can lead to bending in the connection and reduced flexibility against vibrations. Over time, one or more of the ground eyelets can break, which opens the circuit.

Ford said that the symptoms can vary depending on which ground wire has broken. It can result in frustrating, though less immediately hazardous, problems like a washer fluid pump failure, or loss of air conditioning. It can also result in headlights or other lights not working, which is certainly a larger safety issue. It could also cause the engine fan to quit working, or simply shut down the engine entirely.

The failures came to light last June. Members of Ford’s Electrical Distribution Systems team reported that one 2027 Mustang used for durability testing had two broken eyelets, which led to a loss of engine power. The team discovered that the problem predated the 2027 model year cars.

Ford told the NHTSA that it had found eight warranty claims related to this problem between October 2024 and August 2026. Four of those claims were from vehicles that had been in service for less than three months. It is not aware of any reports of accidents or injuries.

    How Will Ford Fix This?

The fix is some new wiring. Ford dealers will replace the eyelets with a new pigtail that redesigns the geometry of the terminal. This gets rid of any interference or unwanted bending stress.

Letters notifying owners are already in the mail. The fix, though, won’t be available until the end of March 2027. Apparently, getting new wiring takes some time. Ford will send out more letters then, and customers will be able to schedule an appointment for the repair.

The recall appears to cover every seventh-generation Ford Mustang built before June 9, 2026. CarBuzz has reached out to Ford to be sure, but the sales numbers line up. While there are 148,663 vehicles affected by the recall, Ford said it expects only 1% are likely to suffer a premature failure of the wiring.

CarBuzz Insight – Why This Matters:

We have written at length about Ford’s extensive recall problems over the last decade. Company CEO Jim Farley has repeatedly promised that the fixes are in place, and that the record will improve as the problems were largely with vehicles designed before his tenure. However, multiple large recalls like this one, for vehicles engineered during his tenure, bring that into question.

We will update this post if new information from Ford becomes available.
