Hyundai and Kia have not always had it easy with some of their Theta engines, spending years dealing with the consequences of buggy, older Theta II engines. But they certainly seem to be on the right track with the Theta III, and this engine is getting great reviews in a range of products, from the Kia K5 GT to the Hyundai Santa Fe. It features an interesting combination of a thick torque curve, dual fuel injection, and good economy. And crucially, the strongest mainstream application of this engine costs about the same as some lower-powered, more established enthusiast cars.

The 2026 Kia K5 GT offers a clear example of what the Theta III engine can do for relatively ordinary cash. In the K5 GT, there’s a turbocharged 2.5-liter inline-four delivering 290 hp at 5,800 rpm and 311 lb-ft, which is all available from 1,650 to 4,000 rpm. The engine drives the front wheels via an eight-speed wet dual-clutch transmission, and the car goes on sale in 2026 for $33,590, not including destination.

Comparing this car with the broader market reveals the 2026 Subaru WRX with its turbo 2.4-liter boxer, generating 271 hp, and selling for $32,495. And then there’s Volkswagen’s 2026 Golf GTI, starting slightly higher at $34,590, and featuring 241 hp and 273 lb-ft. All three cars have something different to bring to the market in terms of their appeal or configuration, but the K5 GT does deliver 290 hp for less than $34,000. And that’s aggressive pricing in today’s enthusiast car market, with Hyundai then extending the value argument even further. For example, its 2026 Sonata N Line uses the same engine, output figures, and wet DCT and goes on sale at $36,050 before freight.

One of this Theta engine’s biggest plus points is its torque delivery, which is probably more revealing than the horsepower. The full 311 lb-ft is available from 1,650 rpm, so the engine doesn’t have to spend half of its life near the red line to feel potent. Meanwhile, the K5 GT still manages to record 23 mpg city, 33 mpg highway, and 27 mpg combined, which is a good balance for something that has almost 300 hp.

The engine also features Hyundai’s Smartstream engineering, which introduces both multi-port and gasoline direct injection for the 2.5 GDI and 2.5 T-GDI, with one injector of each type for every cylinder. The multi-port system features during low to mid-speed driving conditions and gasoline direct injection comes in for high-load and high-rpm operation.

The New Engine Is Still A Theta, Just A Newer One

Hyundai and Kia are probably happy to make a relatively clean break with their Theta engine past and introduce the current 2.5-liter engine family, technically known as Theta III. And some of the improvements are clear to see, with the current K5 GT engine’s 290 hp now representing an increase of about 18% over the 2017 turbo Optima SX and its 245 hp.

Another comparison shows that the Theta III, with 311 lb-ft of torque, is roughly 20% higher than the Theta II aboard the Optima SX, which produced 260 lb-ft. Meanwhile, the 2017 Optima SX 2.0T also recorded 22/31/25 mpg against the current K5 GT’s 23/33/27. And that represents an 8% improvement in combined figures for the K5, even though the newer car has additional power and torque.

The scale of the 2.5T’s deployment is probably one of its strongest endorsements and shows that it’s not just a specialist engine set aside for one costly performance derivative. Buyers can find the engine in the Santa Cruz XRT in 2026, generating 281 hp and 311 lb-ft, and the non-hybrid 2026 Santa Fe delivers 277 hp and 311 lb-ft.

Genesis also demonstrates another side of the architecture. The 2026 GV70 2.5T boasts 300 hp at 5,800 rpm and 311 lb-ft, which once again comes in down low. However, to gain access to the GV70’s ten additional horses (versus the K5 GT), Genesis recommends premium fuel.

When it comes to transmissions, the individual Hyundai Motor Group (HMG) companies use different strategies. For example, the 2026 Sonata N Line uses the dual-clutch transmission, and Kia also retained the eight-speed DCT with its turbo 2026 Sorento. However, Hyundai chose a conventional eight-speed automatic for the non-hybrid 2026 Santa Fe and did the same for the turbo Santa Cruz XRT and Limited.

Early Reliability Is Encouraging But Five Years Isn’t Long-Term Proof

While HMG must be pleased with the general performance of its Theta III engines to date, it probably doesn’t have enough data to declare the architecture bulletproof at something like 150,000 miles. After all, US-market applications reach back to the 2021 model year, which means that the oldest cars are only around five years into their service.

Still, there have been some recall issues to report so far. For example, NHTSA document 21V-524 covered certain 2021 to 2022 Hyundai Santa Fe and Sonata vehicles with the 2.5T Theta III engine. The issue here involved high-pressure fuel pipes running between the pump and rail that were insufficiently torqued during assembly, leading to an elevated risk of fire.

A separate 2022 Santa Fe and Santa Cruz recall dealt with a cracking turbo oil supply pipe. And there have been quite a lot of reports about oil consumption in early 2021 to 2022 Smartstream 2.5 engines. Other vehicle recalls mostly deal with software and transmissions rather than the engine per se, but engine-related problems seem to be far fewer versus the older Theta II.

Those Theta II engine dramas involved 2011 to 2012 Sonatas with 2.0T or 2.4L GDI engines, as well as 2013 to 2014 Sonatas and certain Santa Fe Sports. Hyundai had to subsequently introduce knock sensor software to search for abnormal bearing noise and all of that eventually led to a class action settlement. As a part of that agreement, Hyundai had to extend short block coverage for qualifying vehicles to a lifetime warranty, subject to conditions.

More Power Becomes Easy With A Piggyback But ECU Flashing Is More Complex

2023 Hyundai Sonata N Line engineHyundai

There’s a lot of interest in this engine in the aftermarket where tuners aim to get more than just 290 hp from a stock K5 GT or Sonata N Line. One organization, Burger Motorsports, reckons it can coax another 65 hp and 80 lb-ft of torque at the wheels out of a stock vehicle. It provides a unit that connects to accessible engine sensors and works alongside the factory ECU instead of replacing the factory calibration with a conventional ECU flash. The company provides 91 and 93 octane as well as ethanol blend maps and recommends 91 octane or better for the best performance gains.

Another company offers a 2.5T-specific option for the K5 GT and Sonata N Line. This can adjust the boost pressure according to RPM and engine load to provide selectable maps and live monitoring while requiring a certain type of spark plug. A true ECU calibration scene also exists, with one option offering more than 10,000 maps, with the important maps that tuners need to create Stage 3+ tuning files.

But still, K5 GT owners can’t simply buy a handheld device and plug it into their OBD port to casually rewrite the 2.5T’s ECU. Extra power should be available through a piggyback and professional ECU calibration is clearly possible, but a simple owner-operated OBD flash for the 2.5 is not a plug-and-play solution.

Nevertheless, the Smartstream 2.5 T-GDI Theta III is turning out to be quite a successful engine aboard the current K5 GT. Here, it puts 290 hp into the same general price bracket occupied by the 271 hp WRX and 241 hp GTI, while also adding a broad 311 lb-ft torque curve, regular fuel compatibility, and respectable economy. It’s still too early to say whether these engines will also offer exceptional high-mileage durability, and there have already been some issues with the DCT that the group companies fitted to several applications. But HMG may well have produced one of the strongest affordable mainstream turbo-four packages on sale, so long as it can continue to avoid the old Theta II internal bearing issues.
