The $45,000 Price Difference Might Not Be Worth It

Lucid's New Gravity GT-S Isn't The Cheap Car It Needs, But At Least It's Fast

Now and then, a car comes along that reminds you that we’re living in the future. The freshly launched Lucid Gravity GT-S, with its electric 1,070-horsepower powertrain and sleek design, definitely fits the bill. At $125,900 USD, you’re paying a premium price for a premium SUV, but we’ve come a long way from the days when 1,000 hp was only possible in million-dollar supercars.

To put the EV into perspective, we got to wondering what the Gravity GT-S can do that a Dodge Durango SRT Hellcat Jailbreak can’t for a fraction of the price.

Lucid Is Putting Up Some Very Impressive Numbers

To quickly run down the performance specs on both of these SUVs.

    All-Wheel Drive

According to the scoresheet, the Lucid Gravity GT-S is simply the more powerful SUV. With a 6.2-liter displacement and a supercharger, the Durango’s gas-powered V8 simply can’t touch the four-figure power of the Lucid’s dual-motor powertrain. These kinds of comparisons are only becoming more common. The Tesla Model X Plaid, for instance, cranks out 1,020 hp to the Charger Hellcat Jailbreak’s 710 hp.

Inventive hot-rodders will no doubt continue to squeeze extra horses out of big-displacement combustion engines, but the future of raw performance specs clearly favors electric.

It’s also worth noting that Lucid’s latest release isn’t just a ‘point-and-shoot’ tool either. It comes equipped with independent rear-wheel steering, plus an adaptive air suspension system which adjusts ride height at speed for enhanced stability, so by all accounts, this is quite an advanced performer.

The GT-S Promises 373 Miles On A Charge

    2026 Lucid Gravity GT-SLucid

Lucid’s build-and-price configurator lists the GT-S with a predicted range of 373 miles on a full charge. We’ll have to wait and see how that plays out in the real world when you’re doing three-second takeoffs, but it’s a number that shows how far we’ve come from fleet EVs that had to be plugged in overnight to charge another 30 miles.

The Durango SRT Hellcat Jailbreak averages 13 mpg combined, and it packs a 24.6 gallon tank. That comes out to a range of around 319.8 miles on a full tank. On the highway, the SUV averages more like 17 miles to the gallon, which will have it going 418.2 miles on a full tank, but most drivers may actually tend to get more mileage out of the GT-S than they will out of the SRT for every stop to recharge/refuel.

Impressive Stuff, But Is It The Right Time To Launch This EV?

    2026 Lucid Gravity GT-SLucid

Lucid started the year with 9,000 employees, globally, slashing around 12% of the workforce in February, and another 18% this summer, aiming to save an estimated $158 million per year (but costing the brand around $32 million in severance and benefits expenses). The automaker also dropped the second shift of production at its Arizona plant, hoping to clear out existing inventory before flooding the lots with more cars.

We reported last month on rumors that the brand was seeking counsel from a bankruptcy lawyer, but we reached out to the automaker, and were told otherwise by a company representative.

“The rumors are completely false. The company has sufficient liquidity to carry its operations well into next year, as recently published in its last quarterly filings, and it has not formed any special Board committee to explore the scenarios reported today.”

Bankruptcy rumors aside, the automaker has been surprisingly transparent about many of the issues it’s facing at the moment. Newly-appointed CEO Silvio Napoli recently addressed the company’s financial concerns with a page entitled “Where We Are Today,” a kind of State of the Union Address, conceding that “we have not executed consistently – commitments missed and premature launches.”

    Is The GT-S A Must-Win Project?

    2026 Lucid Gravity GT-SLucid

Lucid’s CEO emphasized that the brand needs to overcome these hurdles by executing “must-win projects.” That may be why the mass-market Cosmos has been delayed from late 2026 to the second half of 2027. On the other hand, someone at Lucid must feel that the GT-S fits the bill.

It’s a high-performance variant of an existing nameplate, which likely made its development relatively inexpensive, and less resource-intensive than building new production facilities and launching a whole new nameplate.

To us, this looks less like a car that’s intended to single-handedly save the brand, and more like a smartly-positioned halo vehicle. You bring the buyer on the floor to check out this thousand-horse monstrosity they’ve been hearing about, and they decide that, hey, that’s a little more car than a working person needs. But the 560-hp Touring model, starting at just $79,900, is just right.

We would compare it to something like the Ford Twister Specials, region-exclusive performance-model Mustangs and Torinos with racetrack-grade engines, and no power steering or power brakes. They handled like a pair of Wile E. Coyote rocket skates, and were more likely to scare drivers than entice them. But you take one out for a spin, you come back wanting a more well-mannered version of the experience, and you drive home in an entry-level ‘Stang.

Dodge Didn’t Really Show Up For The Electric SUV Fight

2026 Dodge Durango SRT Hellcat JailbreakDodge

We’re comparing the GT-S to the Durango SRT Hellcat Jailbreak because Dodge doesn’t have a comparable electric vehicle, and, based on the disappointment that has been the Charger Daytona (which sold a piddly 7,421 units in total last year), we don’t expect to see one anytime soon.

The closest thing Dodge has produced to an electric SUV, to date, has been the Dodge Hornet R/T, which isn’t even an EV, it’s a plug-in hybrid. At 335 hp, the Hornet R/T is surprisingly fun to drive, but to compare it directly to performance SUVs like the Durango SRT Hellcat Jailbreak and the Lucid Gravity GT-S would feel like we were making fun of it, and we like the scrappy little plug-in too much to tease it like that.

The Durango Is A Proven Commodity

    2026 Dodge DurangoStellantis

All of this being said, if you’re in the market for a performance SUV, our advice would be to go ahead and grab that Durango you’ve had your eye on. The Durango SRT Hellcat Jailbreak starts at $80,990, saving you $44,910 on the price of a Lucid Gravity GT-S, 710 hp is already more power than you really need on a daily basis, and the Durango is a proven commodity, with decades of history behind it.

But, all of that aside, you buy a supercar-tier SUV for the thrill of the driving experience, and it’s hard for an EV to match the roar of a supercharged V8.

The Lucid Gravity GT-S Is Ready To Order Right Now

    2026 Lucid Gravity GT-SLucid

The decision between a Durango and a Gravity may ultimately come down to your preference for gas or electric. If you’re after a battery-powered performance model, the GT-S delivers million-dollar power at a low-six-figure price, and we’re not knocking it.

The Lucid Gravity is currently available in three models.

    • Touring – $79,900
    • Grand Touring $98,900
    • GT-S – $125,900

At present, you can select the GT-S in the configurator, pick out your options (we think the $1,300 Tahoe Leather trim adds some much-needed earthy warmth to the clean, Star Trek-like cabin), and review and place your order. A non-refundable $4,000 deposit will be due at the time of purchase, you’ve got a $1,850 destination fee to cover, and, from there, Lucid estimates deliveries in 8-12 weeks.

We like what we’re seeing of the Lucid Gravity GT-S, but if you want high-end electric power, a 2023 Model X Plaid will run you a fair market price of around $70,000 for 1,020 hp and a face-melting 0-60 takeoff of just 2.5 seconds. We’re not going to turn our nose up at a 1,000-hp EV, but at this point that’s less of a landmark moment than it is “the more the merrier.”
