The Motorcycle That Makes More Sense Than A Full-Size Adventure Bike

The Midweight Adventure Bike That Makes Big ADVs Feel Unnecessary

Adventure biking is slowly drifting away from what made the segment appealing in the first place. What began as a class of rugged, go-anywhere machines genuinely built for the trails has transformed into a category obsessed with horsepower, complex electronic riding aids, and luxury-tier touring comfort. Modern flagship adventure bikes look unbeatable in the brochure, but the real test begins the second the pavement ends. That’s where middleweight ADVs start making more sense, and here’s a prime example of a highly capable one.

Large ADVs Impress On The Freeway, Not During Actual Adventures

Lately, the market perception has shifted toward the idea that ‘bigger’ is automatically ‘better’. The modern adventure tourers deliver an undeniable presence and act as long-distance mile-munchers. They bring in a big displacement that provides effortless acceleration. This, along with sophisticated electronic aids, makes riding miles easier. But adventure riding has never meant covering hundreds of miles of asphalt.

The real adventure starts when the road ends, and the route starts becoming narrow, loose, steep, and rocky. In such tricky situations, a motorcycle weighing 500 pounds or more might become hard to manage. On loose trails, the outright horsepower and the riding aids become far less important than balance and agile low-speed handling.

Low Weight And Compact Dimensions Matter More Than Horsepower And Tech Menus

A motorcycle does not become more capable off-road simply because it has more horsepower. In fact, the opposite is often true. On premium adventure bikes, the brochure shows more power and better electronics, but it also adds in more weight. It quickly becomes a liability when you have to turn it around on narrow trails or pick the motorcycle upright after a trailside drop. It’s exactly where the extra pounds work against you.

This is actually where the middleweight adventure bikes shine. They are less powerful and might even be less comfortable than the premium kids, but due to their low weight, they are quite manageable when the surface underneath the tire starts getting unpredictable. This versatility helps them to offer the best of both worlds, meaning a sweet spot for enthusiasts.

The Yamaha Tenere Offers The Ultimate Balance

    Yamaha Motorsports

The middle-weight formula has worked well for Yamaha with the Tenere 700. Rather than joining the horsepower and the gadget wars, Yamaha chose to keep its ADV machine true to its roots. The Tenere 700 is a simple, rugged, capable motorcycle that feels equally capable on highways, trails, and even handling your Monday office runs. By prioritizing narrow bodywork, rally-inspired geometry, and usable power over spec sheet fluff, this Yamaha’s adventure bike offers the best of both worlds.

Justifies Its MSRP With Capable Equipment

Carrying an MSRP of $10,999, the Tenere 700 undercuts several of its middleweight competitors, while costing much less than what you would pay for a powerful ADV bike. One thing also to note here is that Yamaha didn’t hike the price for the MY26 model, even though some of its rivals are now pricier by a few hundred dollars. Oh, and there’s also a World Raid variant on offer if you want something more suited for the long-haul.

    The Bulletproof CP2 Parallel-Twin Has A Pulse Of A V-Twin

Diving deeper, Yamaha’s 689cc CP2 parallel twin engine powers the Tenere, originally proven in the MT-07. The CP2 engine pumps out 72.4 horsepower and 50.2 pound-feet of torque, and is paired with a six-speed gearbox. The engine is widely known as CP2 because of its 270-degree cross-plane crankshaft. This helps the engine have a torquey nature and an uneven firing order similar to a V-twin. This helps the engine feel more alive than a typical 180-degree parallel twin.

The Yamaha Tenere 700 might not be known for delivering outright performance, but it delivers a usable performance that works everywhere. Thanks to its torquey nature, you won’t need to push it hard to get it moving; it responds seamlessly to the throttle inputs even in unpredictable situations. Beyond the power delivery, the CP2 engine is globally known for its bulletproof mechanical reliability, requiring minimal maintenance, which eventually provides peace of mind.

Topped With Dakar Rally Inspired Geometry

The Tenere 700 draws inspiration from Yamaha’s Dakar rally heritage. It is built upon a narrow chassis clearly designed to serve the off-roading purpose. It stays true to its nature, it rolls on 21-inch front and 18-inch rear spoke wheels, allowing generous ground clearance. The motorcycle gets a 43mm inverted fork at the front, and the rear is paired with a monoshock. Elsewhere, the narrow tank profile and flat bench seat encourage the rider to stand up, weight the pegs, and maneuver the bike along trails. It feels like a purpose-built dual-sport motorcycle rather than an oversized street bike wearing knobby tires.

Functional Features Are Included In The Package

    Yamaha Motorsports

Wearing its rally heritage, the Tenere 700 features an aggressive front with vertically stacked quad-LED headlights, a clear rally windscreen, and slim bodywork. Continuing with the rally theme, the cockpit features a 6.3-inch vertically fitted TFT screen, displaying speed, gear position, RPM, and fuel gauge without clutter. Unlike the premium adventure motorcycles that drown riders in the sub-menus while riding, the Tenere 700 takes a different approach. It actually gives you what you need and nothing else. The list includes ride-by-wire with two ride modes (Sport and Explorer), three ABS modes (Fully On, Rear Off, Fully Off), and traction control.

The Competition Has Leveled Up, But The Tenere Holds Its Ground

    Aprilia

At $10,999, the Tenere 700 is positioned in a very crowded space with some equally competent middleweight adventure motorcycles. Its closest competition is the Aprilia Tuareg 660, which packs a sophisticated electronic suite and better suspension. But it costs a premium of $2,500 over the Tenere. Moreover, Aprilia doesn’t have a good reputation for reliability, as Yamaha’s CP2 engine does.

    Honda

The Honda Transalp XL750 is another interesting motorcycle that packs in a reliable engine. But unlike the Tenere, it sacrifices hard off-road capability. The Austrian bike maker’s KTM 890 ADV is known for its off-road capability, lightweight and powerful engine, but it is well suited for aggressive off-roading, and less likely suited for highway touring. The cost of admission is in a different league, too. Meanwhile, the other Japanese models, like the Suzuki V-Strom 650XT and the Kawasaki KLR650, feel dated now.

    Yamaha

So overall, the Tenere 700 might not be the most powerful, lightest, or most technically advanced bike in the segment, but it remains easily the most well-rounded. It ticks off all the checklist boxes, offering tractable power, manageable weight, bulletproof reliability, and an accessible price point, setting the standard for what a real adventure bike should be.
