Genesis has spent the past several years proving that it belongs in the luxury-car conversation, but the 2027 Genesis GV90 may be the vehicle that pushes the brand into genuinely exotic territory. The new all-electric flagship SUV is enormous, powerful, and packed with the sort of features normally associated with vehicles wearing Maybach or even Rolls-Royce badges. Better yet, Genesis did not water down the dramatic Neolun concept nearly as much as many expected. The production GV90 retains its striking proportions, signature two-line lighting treatment, and, in its most extravagant form, a set of rear-hinged coach doors that completely changes the way passengers enter the cabin.

Measuring roughly 208 inches from nose to tail, the GV90 is a serious piece of machinery and sits well above the GV80 in both size and status. Underneath is Genesis’ new eMP electric architecture, which supports a dual-motor all-wheel-drive system producing a combined 657 horsepower and 590 lb-ft of torque. Energy comes from a massive 123.5-kWh battery pack, with Genesis targeting as much as 310 miles of driving range in the seven-seat version. That figure will not threaten long-range EVs from Lucid or Rivian, especially considering the size of the battery, but the GV90 compensates with serious charging capability. Genesis says a 10 to 80 percent charge can be completed in about 22 minutes when connected to a compatible 350-kW DC fast charger.

There will actually be two distinct personalities within the GV90 lineup. The regular model uses traditional doors and can be configured with six or seven seats, making it the more conventional choice for families wanting a large three-row luxury EV. Then there is the GV90 Neolun, which is where Genesis appears to have given its designers permission to get carried away. Its signature feature is a pillarless coach-door arrangement that creates a remarkably wide opening when the front and rear doors are open. Genesis calls the system the Neolun Arch Gate, and the rear doors use an elaborate powered hinge mechanism that allows them to move independently while maintaining the clean, pillar-free appearance.

The Neolun cabin is even more outrageous than the doors suggest. A limited First Edition will feature a four-seat Executive Suite layout designed more like a private lounge than a traditional SUV interior. Front seats can rotate 180 degrees while the vehicle is parked, allowing passengers to face one another, while materials such as wool cashmere, real wood, and unusual two-tone upholstery combinations reinforce the idea that Genesis is no longer simply chasing the established luxury brands. There is even wood flooring, available heated surfaces inspired by Korea’s traditional ondol heating system, privacy features, and a refrigerator. Standard 24-inch wheels complete the look outside, because apparently subtlety was never on the Neolun’s development checklist.

Technology plays an equally major role. A huge 23.6-inch OLED display dominates the dashboard and runs Genesis’ new Pleos Connect infotainment system. When the GV90 is parked, the screen can raise approximately 3.4 inches to create an even larger viewing area for entertainment. Genesis has also eliminated the traditional start button. Approach the GV90, open the door, and the vehicle begins preparing itself automatically. Once inside, pressing the brake pedal is essentially all that is required before setting off. It is the type of small interaction that makes sense in an EV, where there is no combustion engine that needs to be audibly brought to life.

For something this large, chassis technology will be especially important. Air suspension comes standard and provides adjustable ride height, while rear-wheel steering should make the GV90 much easier to maneuver in parking lots and around tight city streets than its dimensions might suggest. Thick acoustic glass is also fitted throughout the lineup, which should help create the hushed atmosphere expected of a true flagship. The Neolun’s pillarless door design also required significant structural engineering, an important consideration when removing a conventional fixed B-pillar from such a large vehicle. Genesis clearly understands that the spectacle of the doors only matters if the underlying SUV still feels exceptionally solid and refined.

Pricing has not been announced for the U.S. market, but the GV90 is unlikely to be inexpensive. A starting point somewhere in the low-$100,000 range for the conventional three-row model would not be surprising, while the GV90 Neolun could easily move toward $150,000 or beyond depending on configuration. That would put Genesis into a pricing neighborhood it could hardly have approached a decade ago. The real question is whether luxury buyers are ready to spend that kind of money on a Genesis. Judging by the GV90’s specification sheet, lavish interior, 657-horsepower drivetrain, and spectacular coach-door Neolun model, Genesis seems more than willing to find out.
