Honda Could Finally Give Its Mazda CX-30 Rival The Engine It Needs

One of the automakers most synonymous with hybrids is Honda, thanks in part to it being among the first to launch one in the modern day. The company recently announced it would focus more on hybridization in the future with next-generation models, having dropped its planned EVs. Honda has opportunities to hybridize current-generation cars, too, though, particularly the Honda HR-V and Acura ADX, and it sounds like it’s considering those opportunities.

We’re Surprised Honda Hasn’t Done This Already

Automotive News spoke with Honda Product Planning Chief Gary Robinson, and he wouldn’t confirm for sure if hybrid versions of the HR-V and ADX were in development, or any kind of timing. Regarding the possibility of the cars reaching production, he said, “I don’t know that there’s any reason why not.” Indeed, making these two SUVs into hybrids should be one of the easiest things Honda could do. They’re effectively just taller versions of the Honda Civic and Acura Integra. They already use the same naturally aspirated combustion engines and transmissions, though with available all-wheel drive. So, it should be almost trivial to fit at least the front-drive hybrid powertrain from the Civic into them.

Robinson did note one potential hurdle, and that would be cost. He said that Honda buyers in particular are price-conscious. He does have a point, here, since Honda is a mainstream automaker, and the HR-V competes in the most affordable bracket of SUVs on the market. It has a starting MSRP of $26,600, and some of its direct competitors start at a couple of thousand less than $25,000. It’s also about $2,000 more expensive than a base Honda Civic sedan, the cheapest version. The cheapest hybrid Honda Civic has a starting MSRP of $29,395, so it wouldn’t be hard to imagine a hybrid HR-V costing around $31,000 or $32,000, which would actually be a bit more expensive than a larger, base CR-V.

    The Competition Isn’t Cheap Either

The thing is, the handful of competitors in the segment are similarly priced to that hypothetical HR-V hybrid price point. The Subaru Crosstrek hybrid has an MSRP starting at $33,995, a bit higher, and the Toyota Corolla Cross starts at $29,795, a bit less. The Kia Niro has an MSRP just under $28,000, though Kia typically undercuts Hondas at all levels and doesn’t necessarily have the same brand appeal as Honda.

Additionally, these are the only three hybrids currently in the segment. Ford seems to have something planned, but if Honda could get an offering out quickly, it would be entering a niche in the subcompact market without too much competition. Also, for Acura, there’s even less competition, and less of a price concern.

CarBuzz Insight – Why This Matters:

Genuinely, we don’t know why Honda didn’t fast-track hybrid versions of the HR-V and ADX when they launched those models. The hardware is basically all there. It’s also good hardware. Honda has an extremely good hybrid powertrain with good power and excellent efficiency. The company could have a class-leading competitor almost overnight, with very little effort, and probably with competitive, if not bargain-basement, pricing. Hopefully, now that Honda seems to be prioritizing hybrid powertrains across its lineups, even in large SUVs, we’ll finally see these subcompacts get the powertrain they should have.
