Like any premium automaker, Porsche is all too happy to build one-off versions of its cars through the Sonderwunsch (or “special request”) program. The latest vehicle isn’t just a vanity project for some well-heeled owner, however. Instead, the Porsche 911 Turbo S Land Down Under edition is, as its name suggests, a celebration of the automaker’s 75th anniversary in Australia, featuring colors and accents inspired by the country and some collaboration with one of its resident artists.

    Outback-Inspired Colors

The color scheme is the most obvious differentiator between this one-of-one Turbo S and its more plebeian equivalents. The seven-layer exterior paintwork is yet another Porsche application of Chromaflair pigments, which have opaque aluminum flecks encased in transparent capsules of varying thickness. The color-shifting effect allows Porsche’s two chosen hues – a gradient between Terra Australis Red along the bottom and Southern Cross Blue up top – to transform into oranges, golds, and greens depending on the ambient light.

The colors were chosen to pay homage to the bold, dry landscape of the Outback, where its flat, iron-rich geology produces vivid red rocks along a horizon of deep, cloudless blue sky. They also have the potentially unintentional effect of looking like a metallic blue Turbo S that’s been barreling across the desert all day long, with rockers and bumpers that are coated in oxide dirt and dust, a situation many an Aussie gearhead has experienced. In either case, the 300-hour paint job looks remarkably cool.

Other novel details include a Southern Cross Blue finish for the 20- and 21-inch wheels, while the roof of the 911 features a ghost-effect 75 in Werner Bronkhorst’s signature typeface to commemorate Porsche’s Australian anniversary. That font also appears in a cheeky message underneath the active rear spoiler: “See you later, mate.” Bronkhorst also exercised his talents on the flanks of the Turbo S, where a minute figure drawing of an Australian cowboy and his dog shows up on the passenger-side door.

    A Stroke Of Genius

The artist’s work can also be found inside the Aussie Porsche, which receives two-tone leather with perforations and embossing that’s meant to evoke the brushwork of the Sydney-based painter. Bronkhorst also made his mark on the dashboard, where a kangaroo and her joey live, as well as on the Australian silky oak wood-paneled seatbacks, which feature the image of a wedge-tailed eagle – the nation’s largest bird of prey.

The headliner of the Turbo S, meanwhile, is an homage to the unique night sky of the Southern hemisphere, with embroidery depicting the constellations as they were visible over Uluru in 1951 – when Porsche arrived. The cabin’s blend of Dark Night Blue, Koolibah Brown, and Kalahari Beige upholstery and finishes suit the design scheme well, as does the topographical inlay on the dashboard and door panels that recall Australia’s Blue Mountains.

CarBuzz Insight – Why This Matters:

Porsche’s Sonderwunsch program is known for some truly bizarre machines – a trio of charity-bound, Toy Story–themed 911s, anyone? – but it’s also made some stunners. The 911 Carrera Sally Special, for example, may be inspired by the Pixar film Cars, but its gorgeous turbo-twist wheels and resplendent blue paint would make anyone stop and stare. The latest entry isn’t nearly as kitschy as its cartoon-inspired siblings, but the 911 Turbo S Land Down Under is no less eye-catching.

We’d love to submit a “sonderwunsch” to Porsche someday, but considering these cars cost more to build than even the pricey Paint To Sample program, that special wish will probably never be fulfilled.
