If you are currently in the market for a new Mercedes-Benz, it is probably because you are looking for a car that has a great amount of comfort, lots of advanced tech features and, of course, plenty of brand appeal. What is perhaps most important of all, however, no matter what car you are looking for is reliability, as there is absolutely no point in having all that luxury in a car if it won’t get you very far. That is why we will be ranking the most reliable Mercedes models for which there is sufficient data available from the most trusted sources.

Mercedes-Benz is in a state of flux right now, with many new models that have been introduced whose long-term reliability hasn’t been tested either because they are too new or they haven’t even arrived yet. One year from now, it may well be necessary to do one of these lists again. But with many of the cars on this list being many years into their respective generations, there is at least a wealth of information we have been able to gather to determine what Mercedes cars are reliable.

This article ranks the top five most reliable Mercedes-Benz models based on their JD Power quality and reliability rating. To be considered, models had to have a rating for the 2026 model year, and have data from the last five years, so that more long-term dependability can be established. All pricing and information about each model is sourced from the manufacturer and correct at the time of writing. Manufacturers reserve the right to change information at a moment’s notice.

    2026 Mercedes-Benz C-Class

J.D. Power Quality And Reliability Rating: 84/100

The Mercedes C-Class has for a long time been one of the most popular Mercedes-Benz models and is currently the automaker’s best-selling sedan. When you consider that it is not only one of the most affordable sedans that Mercedes makes at $49,650, but is also a mini S-Class in terms of its design and also some of the premium features it is available with, it isn’t hard to see why.

It backs up the upscale design and impressive features with an impressively serene ride, although it won’t feel as sporty as perhaps a BMW 3 Series. The 671-hp AMG C63 would fix that though… Mercedes has had four years to iron out many of the gremlins with this fifth generation before the all-new electric C-Class arrives next year. That is why it is currently the most reliable Mercedes sedan and tops our list of the most reliable Mercedes models for 2026.

It has had four issues requiring recalls: one for a seatbelt restraint, another for fuel pump failure being the most severe, and a complaint that has cropped up more than a few times involves the active braking system triggering for no reason. However, the positive consumer feedback it has consistently received shows that these issues have gone on largely in the background, rather than taking center stage. Taking into account this and the fact that its $739 average maintenance cost is less than that of the $908 Mercedes average, it is no wonder we have listed it as the most reliable Mercedes-Benz.

    4

    2026 Mercedes-Benz GLE-Class

J.D. Power Quality And Reliability Rating: 80/100

The GLE occupies the middle ground between the smaller GLC and the full-size GLS and, like the C-Class, goes back a fair few decades, although it originally used to be known as the ML-Class, the first-ever Mercedes sports utility vehicle. The fourth generation of this vehicle was introduced eight years ago, but has had a facelift introduced this year to bring its design in line with all the newer models that have since been introduced.

The same wide range of power unit options is still available, with the four-cylinder GLE 350, the inline-six GLE450, the plug-in hybrid GLE450e, the V8-powered GLE580 and the rabid GLE 53 and GLE 63 variants all still available, and it starts at $62,250.

The J.D. Power quality and reliability ratings also suggest that the GLE is the most reliable Mercedes SUV, with an 80/100 rating, which it has consistently held for the last three years. Owners have appreciated the smooth performance and strong build quality, and though the infotainment interface is not the easiest to navigate, people have praised the accuracy of the voice-activated controls.

It has the number of complaints and recalls you would expect from a large, complex German luxury SUV. These include a recall for one of the airbags not deploying properly in early models, and numerous complaints about a faulty check engine light. The average maintenance cost of a Mercedes-Benz is around $908, but this model is well above that at around $1,200 every year to keep it running in peak condition.

    3

    2026 Mercedes-Benz E-Class

J.D. Power Quality And Reliability Rating: 80/100

Effectively the sedan equivalent to the GLE, the E-Class may not sell as well, owing to the greater popularity of SUVs nowadays, but the midsize Mercedes sedan has a legacy that stretches back far further, having been called the E-Class since 1993.

This sixth generation, known as the W214, was introduced for the 2024 model year, starts at $65,200 and has been praised for the way it combines high-quality materials and old-school comfort with the latest technology and, in the case of the AMG E53, hybrid performance.

Despite it not being rated in its first year, it has managed to achieve a rating of 80/100 based on the initial consumer feedback provided to J.D. Power last year and the year before, which is impressive given that the first model years tend to have the most issues that need resolving. This E-Class has had issues with forward collision avoidance activating unnecessarily like other Mercedes models, and it did have to be recalled for the high-voltage battery potentially causing a fire, but the overall number of complaints and recalls has been relatively low.

    2

    2026 Mercedes-Benz GLA-Class

J.D. Power Quality And Reliability Rating: 78/100

Since the Mercedes A-Class sedan was dropped over four years ago, the GLA SUV has been the cheapest model that Mercedes-Benz produces. We do use the term ‘SUV’ loosely, as this car is almost more of a large hatchback in terms of its size and stature, meaning it makes up for the discontinuation of the A-Class sedan and also the fact that we never got the hatch version in the US.

With a starting price of $41,500, it is priced competitively against its rivals such as the Audi Q3 and the Volvo XC40. It is smaller than those cars, but it is nifty with the interior space that it does have, providing generous room, at least for passengers. The GLA might not be quite as fun to drive as something like the BMW X1, but leaving aside the AMG versions of all the cars on this list, it might just be the most entertaining car to pilot here.

The data shows that the Mercedes GLA is neither a problem child nor a strong performer in terms of reliability. It is the first car on this list to dip below 80 in terms of its J.D. Power quality and reliability rating, but the real concerns potentially lie in the longevity of the M260 inline-four engine, which has been linked with complaints about misfiring due to premature exhaust valve and seat guide wear. The only serious recall made was one that affected multiple models, concerning the open door detection failing resulting in the parking brake not automatically engaging. The average maintenance cost is $987, which is not much more than the average maintenance cost for the brand.

    1

    2026 Mercedes-Benz GLS

J.D. Power Quality And Reliability Rating: 78/100

Moving from the smallest Mercedes SUV to the biggest, the GLS is tied with the GLA in terms of its quality and reliability score from J.D. Power, showing how paying more for a bigger, more opulent machine, doesn’t mean you will necessarily be much happier with the quality of the product you have. The GLS overall has been lauded for achieving a level of luxury that effectively makes it the SUV equivalent to the S-Class, a position further highlighted by the ‘S’ affixed to the end of its name, after having been previously just called the GL.

Highlights include the vast expanse of screens without the entire dash being dominated by them, smooth ride and effortless power delivery, not to mention lots of tech. The lack of storage for smaller items in the cabin and the lethargic nature of the electric-folding second-row seats have both frustrated owners, however.

Owners and reviewers alike have pointed out the rough downshifts the GLS sometimes subjects the driver to, and it may not be long before the complex air suspension in the GLS needs some attention. It has faced a number of recalls, the most severe being one that has hit other Mercedes models, involving the fuel pump delivery module. Overall, the GLS will cost almost $1,300 annually to maintain on average.

    FAQ

    Q: Is Mercedes C-Class or E-Class better?

The Mercedes E-Class and C-Class might both be luxury sedans, but the Mercedes nomenclature suggests that the former is above the latter in terms of positioning in the lineup, size and price point. The E-Class is not only larger and more expensive, but also gets more high-end features and also the option of a bigger inline-six engine. Which is better ultimately depends on what your budgets is and whether or not the extra size and features offered by the E-Class are worth it.

Q: Which Mercedes-Benz Lasts The Longest?

History is full of examples of Mercedes-Benz models that have been so solidly put together and so over-engineered they have outlasted even the people that originally bought them, such as the W123 and W124, predecessors to the E-Class. It remains to be seen whether the current Generation E-Class will achieve the same longevity, but more modern E-Class generations like the W212 have shown similar resiliance.

Q: Which Mercedes Engine is more reliable?

We have discussed in this article Mercedes engines such as the M260, which don’t necessarily have the best longevity. When it comes to the Mercedes engines which are more reliable, a modern example would the M275 inline-four. Produced from 2013 until 2019, the integration of the turbocharger inside the intake manifold along with the durable timing chain help make it one of the less headache-inducing mercedes engines. It was incorporated in the C-Class, GLC and E-Class of the time.
