Mazda’s Cheapest Models Are Unstoppable This Year

Mazda’s July sales in the US were a seriously mixed bag. It was one of the company’s best results for July ever, but still represented a double-digit decrease from last year. And sales of its SUVs dropped significantly, even with the all-new CX-5 at dealers. But it was a completely different story on the car side.

What remains of Mazda’s car department had one of its strongest months in memory, along with the CX-30, showing that buyers are looking for affordable cars in a big way. Mazda’s lower-priced range hasn’t been this robust in years.

Mazda3 Could Outsell All Of Last Year By End Of August

Last month, Mazda dealers moved 3,903 units of the Mazda3, including 2,787 sedans and 1,116 hatchbacks. That’s a massive jump over the same month last year, when Mazda dealers moved just 2,082 units.

It’s not just a one-off; the Mazda3 is selling in volumes it hasn’t seen in some time. For the first seven months of the year, Mazda has sold 24,335 units, up 28% over last year. There’s a solid chance that Mazda will move enough units by the end of August to beat the Mazda3’s total for all of 2025.

It’s another sign that buyers have had enough of ever-increasing new car prices amid stagnant wages and near-record fuel prices in the US, not to mention high costs for food and pretty much everything else. But it’s not just the Mazda3 that’s enjoying a healthy sales bump.

The CX-30 is also improving. Sales of the crossover hit 4,526 last month, up 9.7%. It’s not all sunshine and lollipops, though, as the company’s smallest SUV is still down 33% for the whole year.

Mazda3 And CX30 Sales Improve, But Is It Enough?

The CX-30 is also improving. Sales of the crossover hit 4,526 last month, up 9.7%. It’s not all sunshine and lollipops, though, as the company’s smallest SUV is still down 33% for the whole year. Still, it’s a breath of fresh air considering the challenges facing automakers these days.

It’s especially true for Mazda’s compact sedan and hatch. The model is on pace to get close to 40,000 sales for the year, and if it does that, it would be the first time since 2021. The 3 used to regularly crack into the six-figures for sales, reaching a high of just over 134,000 in 2012. Imagine how well it might be selling if Mazda offered a hybrid model today.

The CX-30 hasn’t been on the market as long, but it also needs a win. After peaking just shy of 100,000 units in 2024, sales were cut nearly in half in 2025 and are on pace to fall by nearly half again in 2026. Mazda said that last year’s crater was on purpose, because it limited imports of the made-in-Mexico model over tariff prices. It’s not clear if that’s still the case.

This sales trend isn’t applicable to just Mazda. Sales of small and affordable cars are up across the industry, at least for the brands that still offer them. Hyundai and Kia are boasting solid gains on the Elantra and K4. Over at Nissan, the Sentra is down for the year, but picking up momentum in the last reported month.

With new vehicle prices at record highs and fuel prices climbing, it’s not a surprise to see buyers moving to smaller and more efficient vehicles. Every dollar spent on gas is a dollar that can’t go toward groceries, and while the extra space of a crossover is appealing, it’s not always a necessity.

Will this pivot bring GM, Ford, and Stellantis back to building cars? Probably not. But it should help ensure the ones that are left stick around.
