    • The first model in GAC Aion’s Ray series is a mid to large-size electric sedan aimed at young buyers.
    • The Ray 7 will be the first vehicle to carry GAC Aion’s new logo, with a body length in the 5-meter class.

GAC Aion, the new energy vehicle (NEV) unit of GAC (HKEX: 2238), has launched a new vehicle series as it tries to court younger buyers with a fresh image.

On Tuesday, GAC Aion unveiled the new Ray series, with the first model named the Ray 7 and positioned as a “super electric sedan loved by young people.”

The Ray 7 will be the first vehicle to carry GAC Aion’s new logo, with a body length in the 5-meter class, a low and wide stance, and streamlined styling, GAC Aion said in a poster.

The Ray 7 uses batteries from CATL (HKEX: 3750) and features GAC Aion’s magazine battery safety technology, it said.

The vehicle also comes with what it calls a super chassis, claimed to be the world’s first to use a chip-level integrated drive and braking architecture.

Its driver assistance system uses a LiDAR-based solution, with algorithms derived from the same stack as L4 autonomous driving.

GAC Aion has yet to announce the Ray 7’s price, range or launch timing.

Zhang Xiong, president of the GAC Hyptec and Aion Business Unit, said earlier this month that the first model in the new series is a mid to large-size electric sedan, aiming to become young buyers’ first super electric sedan.

GAC Aion is one of China’s earliest NEV brands and posted strong sales several years ago.

Last year, however, its sales fell sharply, with full-year deliveries of 290,081 units, down 22.62% year-on-year, according to data compiled by CnEVPost.

In addition to Aion-branded models, GAC Aion also has the Hyptec brand. Last year it integrated the two brands to reduce internal cannibalization.

The new series arrives as GAC Aion’s sales recover. The brand delivered 37,489 vehicles in June, up 88.5% year-on-year and 17.4% from May.

In the first half of this year, GAC Aion delivered 181,579 vehicles, up 67.1% year-on-year. That marks a turnaround from its sales decline in 2025.
