- The Leapmotor A05 offers 405-km and 510-km range options and will compete with the BYD Dolphin and Geely Xingyuan.
- It is the second model built on Leapmotor’s A platform and a key new vehicle in the company’s push to reach its 2026 delivery target of 1 million units.
Leapmotor (HKEX: 9863) has opened pre-orders in China for its compact electric vehicle (EV), the A05, bringing the model a step closer to its official launch.
The Stellantis NV (NYSE: STLA)-backed Chinese EV maker said Monday that consumers can place a reservation with a deposit of 99 yuan ($15) and receive pre-order benefits.
Leapmotor did not disclose the A05’s pre-sales price or planned launch date. The so-called “blind reservation” period will run from July 27 until the model’s official launch event.
Display vehicles have begun arriving at Leapmotor stores across China, and the company is inviting consumers to visit showrooms to experience the model.
The A05 is the second model built on Leapmotor’s A platform after the A10 small SUV (sport utility vehicle), and the platform’s first sedan.
The vehicle is technically a compact hatchback, although models of this type are generally classified as sedans in the Chinese market.
The A05 measures 4,200 mm in length, 1,800 mm in width and 1,560 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2,605 mm, according to previous regulatory filings.
Its battery suppliers include Gotion High-tech (SZSE: 002074) and Zenergy. The model offers 39.8-kWh and 53-kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery packs, providing ranges of 405 km and 510 km, respectively.
Motor options have peak outputs of 70 kW and 90 kW, while the vehicle has a top speed of 160 km/h. Leapmotor said the A05 supports fast charging that can replenish the battery from 30% to 80% in 16 minutes.
The A05 is powered by Qualcomm’s flagship Snapdragon 8295 chip and features an 8.88-inch digital instrument cluster and a 14.6-inch central infotainment screen. LiDAR is available as an option, enabling parking-space-to-parking-space navigation-assisted driving.
Leapmotor said the A05 is the only premium hatchback in its class to offer LiDAR and parking-space-to-parking-space assisted driving.
The company is positioning the A05 as an urban commuter vehicle primarily aimed at young female consumers.
By comparison, the A10 is positioned as an additional vehicle for families. Leapmotor refers to the 2 models as its “double-A top students” lineup.
The company previously mentioned a higher-spec A05s special edition featuring an exclusive metallic black exterior and pink wheels.
After its launch, the A05 will compete directly with popular compact EVs including the BYD Dolphin and Geely Xingyuan.
For reference, the A10 was launched in China in March with a price range of 65,800 yuan to 86,800 yuan.
A10 sales reached a record 26,804 units in June, exceeding 20,000 units for the second consecutive month, according to data compiled by CnEVPost.
Leapmotor management said during an earnings call in March that the A05 would be introduced during the summer launch window. The company expects new models, including the A10, to contribute 60% of its total sales in 2026.
Leapmotor delivered a record 93,376 vehicles globally in June, up 94.51% year-on-year. Deliveries in the first half totaled 356,487 units, an increase of 60.82%.

However, that represented only about 35.6% of its full-year 2026 delivery target of 1 million vehicles.
Leapmotor senior vice president Xu Jun said on July 16 that the company currently has no plans to revise its full-year target.
He said Leapmotor would make efforts across products, marketing and sales channels in the second half to get as close to the target as possible.
Leapmotor shared the first interior images of the A05s after previewing the vehicle last week.
