There are reveals, and then there are unveilings that require realignment of one’s understanding of what a Range Rover represents. Standing inside JLR’s Electric Propulsion Manufacturing Centre (EPMC) in Wolverhampton, UK, I witnessed the Range Rover Grand Tourer in the flesh. The 5th sibling of the stately SUV family arrives with steady confidence, striking dimensions, and a technology-oriented yet comforting interior.

Call it a sports car in a tuxedo. That’s not hyperbole. The prototype showcased at EPMC was clad in a two-tone white-and-graphite-gray paint combination, with the darker tone pooling across the hood resembling a shadow. Yet, for presentation, JLR is featuring it publicly with this intriguing and artistic graphic wrap inspired by the topography of Gaydon. Running the full length of the greenhouse, from A pillar to tail, sits a signature GT blade: a raised, sculpted panel atop the doors akin to the satin lapel of a dinner jacket. It’s a small detail with an important role, signifying the elegant traits of this particular Range Rover.

The silhouette itself does the rest of the convincing. This is the lowest center of gravity of any Range Rover, and you feel that claim once seated inside. The roofline drops, and the shoulders rise as the vehicle reads 4-door coupé rather than SUV. Four and a half years of development represent these proportions, and aerodynamicists clearly take precedence. The nose phases into the grille, the surfaces are simplified and scrubbed of excess, while the tail cuts off with an abruptness that I’m still deciding whether to love or dismiss. It’s a Kamm-style truncation in service of the drag coefficient, so I understand the physics. My eyes, trained on decades of Range Rover’s graceful rear overhangs, need a moment longer to make peace with it.

Frameless doors lend the cabin an open, glasshouse feel when they swing wide. The wheel arches protrude with athletic muscularity, anchoring 22-inch two-tone rims wrapped in staggered Goodyear Eagle high-performance rubber and stamped with the new Range Rover motif.

“The Range Rover GT will redefine the grand-touring segment with the ability to deliver beautiful and engaging GT poise, proportions and long-distance refinement while offering capabilities no conventional GT can match,” said Martin Limpert, Managing Director, Range Rover. “We have spent the last few years working obsessively on the fundamentals of the GT formula, reinterpreted in a sophisticated, uniquely Range Rover way. The result is the most car-like, yet unmistakably capable, Range Rover ever created, now possible on our electrified EMA architecture.”

Up front, three slender illuminated lines stand in for headlamps, and the grille has shrunk, borrowing a page from the Evoque’s playbook rather than the full-size Range Rover’s traditional grandeur. Flush door handles disappear into the bodywork until summoned. Out back, a black diffuser punctuates the lower valance. The GT is also the stiffest body structure any Range Rover has worn.

Inside is where the Range Rover GT makes its most interesting argument. Climb in, and the cabin’s language is unmistakably architectural. Vertical air vents run like fluted columns rather than the horizontal sweep you’d expect, and the entire environment embraces an uninterrupted, minimized aesthetic that owes more to a Chelsea flat than a traditional SUV cockpit. It’s clean. It’s disciplined. Yet, it also leaves a question mark. Is this restraint a little too quiet for a marque that built its identity on exquisite abundance? I sat with that question for a while and haven’t fully resolved it. We shall see when the production model is presented.

What isn’t in question is the space. Settle into the rear seat, and the headroom is plentiful for a vehicle wearing a coupé-like roofline. Range Rover GT will offer buyers a choice in the rear: a traditional three-across bench, or a pair of individual thrones flanking a central control pad. A full-width panoramic roof floods the space with light, reinforcing that sense of unbounded freedom.

Controls are operated through a minimalist strategy which will please any fan of touchscreen-only menus. The steering wheel itself has been reconceived as a control surface. Touch-sensitive zones adjust the wheel’s position and the door mirrors, working alongside a new set of control stalks. Ahead of the console, a translucent sliding cover conceals the dual wireless phone charging pads. This small theatrical gesture is pretty clever. Sound comes courtesy of a Meridian audio system. The seats are wrapped in a new synthetic material, and the panels feature a knitted textile engineered with acoustic properties that allow sound to pass directly through. This presents an unusually elegant solution to hiding speakers within the actual textile rather than behind grilles. It’s part of a suite of beautiful materials offered by Range Rover.

Range Rover has always sold us on its lavishness and capability, the idea that one vehicle could credibly do everything asked of it. The GT doesn’t abandon that ambition so much, but directs it into a new expression: long-haul comfort, effortless electric performance, and the all-terrain competence the badge demands. But even camouflaged, even mid-development, the Range Rover GT already reads as the most confident silhouette this family has produced. Yes, the tuxedo fits.
