How the hybrid retail model is reshaping aftermarket operations

The growing shift toward hybrid retail models is reshaping how automotive aftermarket companies operate, forcing them to manage multiple sales channels while meeting rising customer expectations.

Retailers are increasingly combining online, in‑store and delivery channels into a single operating model, Patrick Lucey, senior catalogue analyst at Advance Auto Parts, explained recently at Auto Care Connect in Atlanta.

“The hybrid model offers its customers options, options, options,” he said, speaking during the session hosted by the Aftermarket Content Professionals Network.

Those options include how customers browse, purchase and receive products — but they also add significant complexity for retailers.

“You’re basically running three or four businesses at one time,” Lucey observed.

That model requires companies to coordinate e‑commerce platforms, physical stores, pickup services and delivery networks, often simultaneously.

“We have to be everything to everybody all the time,” he said.

As a result, retailers are focusing on creating a consistent customer experience across all touchpoints, regardless of how a transaction begins or ends.

“We want one experience everywhere: Online, in person, in store, delivery, whatever it is,” Lucey said. “We want that to be consistent across the board.”

Maintaining that consistency presents operational challenges, particularly when service levels vary across channels or locations.

“We’ve all experienced payment methods not working, computer systems going down, a certain fast-food restaurant whose ice cream machine never works,” Lucey said. “These are challenges for us in a hybrid industry.”

To support the hybrid model, companies are prioritizing several key capabilities, including seamless omnichannel systems, improved product search and unified inventory management.

“Easy to find equals easy to buy,” Lucey explained. “Whether that’s having physical store knowledge, knowing your catalogue systems or just solid store organization, we got to help our customers find what they need the quickest way we can.”

He noted that many aftermarket products are not visible to customers in stores, making staff knowledge and backroom organization critical.

“In the aftermarket, half of our items, or more, are in the back room. So having customer-facing employees with a working knowledge of that backroom is critical to pull this off successfully,” Lucey said.

At the same time, customers expect accurate availability information when shopping online or in store.

“If you say you have it, then have it,” Lucey said.

The hybrid model also requires more targeted marketing approaches, as retailers attempt to reach different customer segments with tailored messaging.

“We need to be everything to everybody all the time,” he said.

While the model offers flexibility and broader reach, Lucey said its success depends on the ability to replicate a high‑quality experience across all channels.

“The challenge for us is replicating that across all of our sales channels. And if we can do that, that’s when we have success,” he said.
