    If you were to wake up one morning and decide that you wanted a hot hatch for some weekend driving adventures, where would your mind turn? Be honest, would you be likely to think of a Hyundai? After all, you’d be able to find plenty of Volkswagen GTIs or Honda Civic Type Rs, which are renowned for pushing engineering limits and setting some high bars. Yet Hyundai can certainly stand up against those icons with its quick, aggressive, and early-model, stick-shift Veloster N.

    Even though the company stopped making the Veloster N in 2022, there are plenty of reasons why it should command your attention today. It may no longer be in the showroom, but those who own one tend to guard it with care. Perhaps they know that this is a real hot hatch with raw performance and style – even though it’s a little quirky here and there.

    Why the Veloster N Still Matters in 2026

    To understand the story behind the Veloster N, you need to take a closer look at Hyundai’s ambitious N performance division. This is the company’s high-performance brand, set up in 2012 and the “N” is allegedly a nod to the Namyang district of South Korea, where you’ll find the home of Hyundai’s global R&D.

    The Veloster N is one of the division’s true success stories and was its first hot hatch for global consumption. Out of the box, it earned plenty of accolades and its punchy hot-hatch formula hasn’t gone out of style at all. In 2025, you can still love its lightweight design, six-speed manual gearbox, turbocharged power, and lack of frills. It’s one way to get your driving kicks in the modern era without too many unwanted or even unnecessary driver aids.

    If you still wonder how Hyundai joined the chat about true hot hatches, remember that the South Korean company has been racing in the World Rally Championship for a long time now. While it campaigns the unlikely i20 as its rally car, it’s still in the business of performance innovation. As a winner of the WRC, arguably the toughest motor sport category of all, you can be sure that a lot of this experience has found its way into cars such as the Veloster N.

    Performance That Punches Above Its Weight

    As standard, the Veloster N has a 250-hp, 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-4. It’s got front-wheel drive and has a top speed of 155 mph with credible acceleration. All figures that make it competitive with its peers and sometimes more expensive rivals.

    Some of the real magic appears to be in the chassis set up. It feels well planted when driving through a sequence of corners with neutral handling and real precision. The driver will feel the pavement beneath and get genuine feedback through the suspension system. Of course, the manual shifter is almost mandatory in a car like this, and it’s short and responsive.

    If you want to go even further, look for the Veloster N with a performance package, sometimes tagged the “performance car.” For a reasonable amount of additional money, you’ll get 25 more horses but, crucially, an electronically-controlled limited slip differential as well. This will be worth its weight in gold when you hit some slippery back roads, as sensors will automatically ensure that power is sent to the relevant wheel based on traction. The performance car has bigger brakes and a rather gimmicky “active variable exhaust system,” that spits out pops and crackles and makes you feel like a real boy racer.

    A Three-Door Design That Stands Out

    Quirky is a good word to describe the design of the Veloster N, which was certainly different with its unusual three-door layout. There’s one longer door on the driver’s side, but two on the opposite, with the third door handle hidden to maintain the design aesthetic. Was this practical in the real world or just something cool? Either way, the South Koreans dared to be different in this department. Otherwise, the bright Performance Blue paint option was a touch of exclusivity to this model, and it also had a distinctive rear spoiler with aggressive front and rear bumpers. Add dual exhaust tips to the back, and the Veloster N will stand out from the crowd.

    It looks good inside as well with cloth sports seats and blue accent stitching. It’s got an easy-to-use infotainment system and a digital instrument cluster that allows you to configure the ride ahead on the performance version.

    Towards the end of its life, Hyundai introduced an eight-speed wet dual-clutch transmission for the Veloster N. It had electronic actuators to operate the dual clutches and either a manual or fully automatic mode. This also gave you access to what the company calls “video game-like features” to enhance your driving fun. All in all, a nice, compact footprint with a wheel in each corner and short overhangs. It sits low to the ground, which is going to give it a planted feel when you’re pushing along.

    Something Suitable for Every Day

    When you’re not looking for the twistiest back road you can find, the weekend warrior becomes a daily driver. On board, it has a decent sound system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connections. You can fold down the seats and access the rear hatch so you can haul luggage or groceries, and even though the fuel economy was not brilliant by compact car standards, it was certainly OK for a turbocharged performance vehicle. The Veloster N also came with Hyundai’s generous five-year or 60,000-mile warranty for peace of mind, which an owner could potentially transfer to another buyer.

    How the Veloster N Looks in the Market

    Of course, the Veloster N is firmly in the used category now, so what can you find on the open market if you’re interested? Early models with a reasonable mileage are between $22,000 and $25,000. And as the vehicle had a relatively short production run and seems to have built up a cult following, low-mileage versions in great condition may be straying into the collectibles market.

    Why the Veloster N Drove Off into the Sunset

    The Veloster N seems to have become a victim of shifting sentiments and new consumer preferences. Hyundai brought out new models like the Elantra and Kona and, as these were more mainstream, they had broader appeal. Across the entire industry, you can see a shift towards crossovers and away from compact vehicles and this quirky hatch may not fit the mold of what most buyers wanted.

    The Veloster N is a Cult Classic You Shouldn’t Ignore

    The Veloster N checks both boxes in the realm of enthusiast cars, in that it is both fast and fun. Certainly, it doesn’t have the prestige of a German badge or be as in your face as a performance Honda, but it’s got character and capability. Here, you can find a car that has impressive performance, a manual gearbox, and real driver feedback, while you won’t need to spend a fortune to buy one either.

    So, while the rest of the world moves towards hybrids, automatics, and technical gizmos that drive the car for you, why not fall in love with this oddball three-door hatchback instead?
