Despite recent faltering demand for luxury EVs, Porsche is forging ahead with its plan to make the Macan lineup all-electric. The automaker is pulling the plug on the gasoline-powered compact SUV this month, marking the end of the automaker’s oldest product currently on sale. The original Porsche Macan debuted for the 2015 model year to much acclaim, and it quickly became the company’s bestseller for most of its commendable 12-year run. Porsche does plan to introduce a new internal combustion Macan successor, but that may not happen for a couple of years.

Pour One Out For The Feisty Porsche
According to reporting from Motor1, which we independently verified, the automaker is ceasing production of its internal-combustion compact SUV. That move that will force Porsche’s gasoline devotees into either the similarly sized Macan Electric or the larger and more expensive Cayenne. The timing of the move is rather puzzling, however. In 2025, the internal-combustion Macan outsold its EV sibling by two to one, and with Porsche struggling with profitability (despite record-breaking sales), it seems odd to discontinue a vehicle its age – we’d think the design and tooling costs are paid back in full by now.

We’re not sure when exactly the 2026 Macan will exit production, and we’ve asked Porsche for comment on whether order books are still open for the turbocharged crossover. If so, interested parties should act very quickly, as time is running out for the four- and six-cylinder family members. For our part, we really enjoy driving the Macan, especially the near-entry-level T model. Its 261 horsepower, courtesy of a turbocharged 2.0-liter inline-four, may not sound all that impressive, but the T includes lots of extra handling and performance gear that makes it a genuine and well-balanced blast to drive on a curvy road.
The Macan Goes EV Only (For Awhile At Least)
As recently as 2024, Porsche was committed to turning some of its most popular model lines into EVs. The Macan Electric was the first example, introduced that year and planned to sell alongside the gas-powered Porsche for a relatively short amount of time. However, the automaker revised its EV-heavy ambitions a bit after launching the crossover, partly due to consumer feedback and partly because of slower-than-expected demand for electric cars.

As a result, Porsche extended the life of the gasoline Macan and committed to a second-generation small crossover that would be sold alongside the Electric. But although the current SUV is being discontinued, its successor won’t arrive for another few years. That means that anyone interested in a Macan will be limited to the EV – we doubt they’ll be too disappointed, since it drives incredibly well and offers great electric range and charging specs.

For what it’s worth, a similar fate befell the 718 Boxster and Cayman. Porsche intended for its mid-engined sports cars to become full EVs, but such a vehicle hasn’t materialized, and the automaker decided it would design yet another generation of entry-level sports cars powered by gasoline.

The death of the ICE-powered Macan couldn’t come at a worse time for Porsche. As expenses mount – last year, the brand had an operating profit of just 0.3 percent in the United States despite record-breaking sales – we don’t see the pricey, complex Macan Electric making up for its internal combustion sibling’s sales success. Then again, perhaps Porsche is freeing up production capacity at the Leipzig facility where the crossover is built, intending to backfill it with a higher-margin product. Think a flagship supercar or pricey, seven-seat luxury SUV.
