- BYD’s 17 millionth NEV comes just 82 days after its 16 millionth rolled off the line.
- The milestone vehicle is the flagship sedan Seal 08, which had just launched on July 2, with a starting price of 196,900 yuan ($28,950).
BYD (HKEX: 1211) has rolled out its 17 millionth new energy vehicle (NEV), marking another key production milestone for the Chinese auto giant.
The milestone vehicle is the Ocean lineup’s flagship sedan Seal 08, the automaker officially announced through its official channels on Wednesday.
This comes just 82 days — less than three months — after BYD reached its 16 millionth NEV production milestone on April 17, 2026. The milestone vehicle at that time was the second-generation Denza D9 MPV (multi-purpose vehicle).
By comparison, it took BYD 120 days to go from its 15 millionth to its 16 millionth. The renewed shortening of the interval between milestones reflects an easing of the company’s capacity bottlenecks and a gradual recovery in sales.

Major milestones in BYD’s NEV production
Cumulative production
The Seal 08 was officially launched on July 2 and offers six variants across plug-in hybrid and pure electric options, with a starting price of 196,900 yuan.
It is BYD’s first model to come standard with flash charging technology across its entire plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) and battery electric vehicle (BEV) lineup.
The car is equipped with the second-generation Blade Battery and claims the longest pure electric range in its class.
The BEV version is built on an 800-volt high-voltage platform, offering a CLTC pure electric range of up to 905 kilometers, with a five-minute charge replenishing 400 kilometers of range.
The entire Seal 08 lineup is equipped with the LiDAR version of the God’s Eye B smart driving assistance system, supporting dual fallback for urban navigation assistance and intelligent parking, and comes with AEB automatic emergency braking.
BYD is also offering 12 months of free flash charging for the new car.
The mid to large-size sedan is one of BYD’s important moves to expand into the premium market in 2026, and its launch is expected to boost the performance of the Seal series. The series posted cumulative sales of 170,142 units in the first half of this year, down 16.02% year-on-year.
The Shenzhen-based company has seen rapid growth in its NEV production and sales over the past several years, despite overall pressure in the first half of this year.
BYD produced its first NEV in December 2008, and it was not until May 2021 that it rolled out its 1 millionth NEV. Since then, its production pace has been significantly accelerated.
The 10 millionth milestone was reached on November 18, 2024, while the interval from 10 million to 15 million was just 13 months.
The new milestone comes as BYD’s sales gradually recover. The company had previously switched from the first-generation Blade Battery to the second-generation product featuring flash charging, which at one point led to extended delivery cycles for several mainstay models.
BYD sold 403,472 NEVs at wholesale in June, up 5.46% year-on-year, achieving its second consecutive month of year-on-year growth.
Of these, overseas sales reached a record high of 175,349 units, surging 94.73% year-on-year.
However, its domestic market remained under pressure, with June domestic sales falling 22.02% year-on-year.
In the first half of this year, BYD’s cumulative NEV sales stood at 1,808,511 units, down 15.72% year-on-year.
BYD sold 557,090 BEVs in the second quarter, about 77,000 units more than Tesla’s 480,126.
